Commentary

That's all for now though, goodbye!
The result sends Liverpool 16 points clear at the top as their unbeaten march to the title continues. As for United; they remain in fifth and will rue a missed opportunity to take advantage of both Chelsea and Leicester falling to defeats above them.
Liverpool secure a deserved 2-0 win after Salah's late strike allowed the hosts to overcome a nervy ending. Liverpool - as we've come to expect - started brightly and quickly took the lead when Van Dijk steered Alexander-Arnold's corner beyond De Gear. From there, the hosts should have added to their lead but squandered numerous chances, while Wijnaldum and Firmino also had goals ruled out. United mustered little in response but could have equalised through Pereira's desperate lunge at the back post. The second half initially followed a similar pattern as Liverpool wasted plenty of opportunities to add to their lead, but United steadily grew into the game. Martial wastefully blasted over when clean through and Greenwood almost connected with a cross to equalise, but the away side couldn't find an equaliser and Salah wrapped up the contest with a late breakaway goal - earning Liverpool a 2-0 lead and yet another win.
90' + 5' FULL TIME: Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United
Mohamed Salah
Yellow Card
Liverpool
90' + 4' Salah is shown a yellow card for removing his shirt in the celebrations.
Alisson
Assist
Liverpool
90' + 3' Salah may have had the freedom of the pitch to run through there, but the goal still required Alisson to cleverly hammer a quick drop-kick over the top to the attacker!
Mohamed Salah
Goal
Liverpool
90' + 3' SALAH WRAPS IT UP! 2-0! United throw everyone - apart from De Gea - up for the corner, allowing Liverpool to quickly clear it away to Salah who holds off the recovering run of James before sliding a smart finish underneath De Gea and into the net!
90' + 2' James scampers towards the byline where Henderson meets him to concede a corner. However, the delivery is too deep and Liverpool clear again.
90' + 1' Three minutes of stoppage time are added on as Manchester United continue to launch cross after cross into the Liverpool box.
90' Fred hits in a threatening cross that Van Dijk heads behind for a corner, before the Dutch defender then rises highest yet again to clear the next set-piece.
89' Lallana clumsily drags Mata down a few yards outside the box, presenting United with another opportunity to whip a delivery in.
88' Mata swings another set-piece into the Liverpool area but the hosts comfortably clear again.
Diogo Dalot
L. Shaw
Manchester United
87' Dalot comes on for Shaw who was playing with the added nerves of a man on a yellow card.
85' After a strong spell earlier in the half, United have struggled to create any chances: they're looking like they're increasingly out of ideas at the moment.
D. Origi
Roberto Firmino
Liverpool
83' Firmino makes way for Origi as the hosts look for an injection of energy up top.
Fabinho
S. Mané
Liverpool
83' Mane is replaced by Fabinho as Liverpool look to tighten up their lead.
81' Mata swings in a dangerous corner for the away side, but Van Dijk is there to firmly head it away from harm.
80' Both teams looks as though they could conjure up a goal as the game approaches a thrilling final 10 minutes.
78' Greenwood goes inches away from equalising! Martial curls in a wicked cross towards the back post where Greenwood rises above Andy Robertson, but the young attacker can't quite stretch enough to nod it in from close range and the delivery drifts out for a goal kick.
76' Liverpool push forward down the right where Alexander-Arnold whips in a powerful cross that Mane exquisitely flicks towards the back post for Firmino, but the attacker can't quite engineer the room for a shot and United clear.
M. Greenwood
B. Williams
Manchester United
74' Greenwood comes on for the more defensive Williams as United clearly go in search of an equaliser.
Mata
Andreas Pereira
Manchester United
74' Pereira is replaced by Mata in attack.
L. Shaw
Yellow Card
Manchester United
72' Shaw is booked for hauling Salah over after the attacker had skipped past him down the right flank.
70' Salah scampers past Matic before being tripped by the midfielder, earning Liverpool a free-kick. The hosts will take that as a much need breather after United have steadily increased the pressure over the last 10 minutes.
68' Fred storms forward again before hitting a swerving effort from distance that Alisson just about manages to palm away for a corner! However, the resulting set-piece is played along the ground and the hosts manage to scramble it clear.
A. Lallana
A. Oxlade-Chamberlain
Liverpool
66' Oxlade-Chamberlain is replaced by Lallana in midfield for Liverpool.
65' Liverpool have now scored in all 22 Premier League fixtures they've played in this season. The last side to score in each of their first 22 games of a season in the competition were Arsenal in 2001-02, who scored in all 38 games in a title-winning term.
63' Mane goes close again! This time it's Liverpool's turn to hit United on the break as Wijnaldum slaloms brilliantly past Maguire to create a three-on-three before slipping Mane in behind at an angle, where the attacker rolls a placed effort inches wide from close range!
61' The away side will be buoyed immensely by those two chances though. They've had to defend bravely amidst wave after wave of Liverpool pressure in this half, but the game is just showing signs of turning into more of an end-to-end affair suddenly.
59' Martial wastes a huge chance! The France forward plays a delightful one-two with Pereira on the edge of the box, before gliding past Gomez and finding himself through on goal! However, the attacker snatches at the bouncing ball and hammers a half-volley over from eight yards, while Alisson would have been beaten if he'd hit the target.
57' Fred almost equalises! Man Utd make a rare foray forward on the counter-attack, which Fred leads by driving at the Liverpool defence before placing a shot inches wide from 20 yards! The hosts will need to remain wary of the threat United pose on the break as the game progresses.
56' Firmino shimmies past Lindelof near the byline before hammering a dangerous shot at goal that Maguire bravely blocks away from danger.
55' Liverpool's dominance today is underlined by just how many opportunities they've created compared to the away side. The hosts have had 12 shots (eight of which have been inside the box) compared to United's three; and they've had 10 corners compared to United's zero.
53' Oxlade-Chamberlain lashes a fierce low drive at goal from distance that De Gea does well to claim without spilling.
52' Liverpool are producing an electric spell of pressure here! All United can do is hope to cling onto the one-goal deficit right now and try and search for an equaliser later on.
50' Henderson hits the post! Liverpool look desperate to add to their lead quickly and almost do so through their captain! Henderson receives a pass from Salah before driving at the backtracking United defence and cracking a fierce half-volley against the post from 25 yards!
48' Salah misses a brilliant chance! Liverpool quickly pick up from where they left off in the first 45 as Mane slips a rampaging Andy Robertson through down the left flank, before the full-back drills in a cross to the six-yard box, where an unmarked Salah miscues a simple opportunity inches wide of the far post!
46' Liverpool get the second half underway.
To get back into this, United will need to throw more men forward at some stage though; you wouldn't be surprised if Greenwood was quickly introduced in the second period if the score remains the same.
Liverpool take a deserved 1-0 lead into the break after dominant first half performance. The hosts quickly began to exert pressure on United and it didn't take long for them to find an opener: after a succession of set-pieces, Van Dijk was able to powerful blast a header beyond De Gea. From there, United did well to simply not concede any further goals. Mane went close on several occasions, while Firmino and Wijnaldum both had strikes disallowed. However, the away side did briefly threaten towards the end of the 45 when Pereira almost tapped home after good work from Wan-Bissaka. Nevertheless, United will be pleased to go in with the score at just 1-0.
45' + 2' HALF TIME: Liverpool 1-0 Manchester United
45' Brilliant save from De Gea! Liverpool hit United on the break as Firmino slips Mane clean through on goal, and the attacker advances menacingly towards De Gea before lashing a powerful low shot that the goalkeeper instinctively flicks away with his legs!
44' Pereira lets fly from distance but his powerful effort is comfortably by Alisson.
43' Manchester United probe on the edge of the area again, but the move stalls as James and Fred crash into each other allowing Gomez to clear.
41' Pereira almost equalises! United are growing into the game slightly and another foray forward ends with Martial clipping a measured cross to the back post, before Wan-Bissaka stretches to poke it back across goal where Pereira goes inches away from tapping it into an empty net with a desperate lunge!
39' Martial cuts inside and fires a tame shot wide from 25 yards.
35' Liverpool have another goal ruled out! The hosts fire quick passes around on the edge of the box once more, culminating with Firmino threading Wijnaldum clean through on goal, before the midfielder rolls a calm finish past De Gea! However, VAR doesn't need to intervene this time, as the linesmen raises his flag and rules out the goal for a clear offside.
33' Salah and Mane combine sharply on the edge of the area, allowing the latter to drive into the box. However, just as it looks as though Mane might squeeze through on goal, Maguire steps in expertly to take it away from the attacker.
31' United look a little shocked after this spell of pressure from the hosts and they attempt to slow the game down with a period of patient, unthreatening possession.
29' Firmino has a chance to make it two! Liverpool fly forward again and this time Salah races in behind Shaw before squaring it to Firmino who flicks an effort inches wide from six yards!
27' Firmino's goal is disallowed by VAR! As soon as the strike rippled the net, the United players were furiously arguing with the referee about Van Dijk's challenge on De Gea and VAR quickly intervenes to rule out the goal for a foul on the goalkeeper!
26' BRILLIANT STRIKE FROM FIRMINO! 2-0! The hosts whip another corner into the box and United fail to clear their lines again! A second delivery is lofted towards De Gea who gets barged away from the ball by Van Dijk, before Mane feeds the loose ball to Firmino who swings a fierce shot into the top corner! But wait...this one is unsurprisingly going to VAR. It looked like a clear foul of De Gea.
David de Gea
Yellow Card
Manchester United
25' De Gea is booked for furiously remonstrating with the referee.
25' Mane almost makes it two! Firmino drifts onto the left-wing before squaring a pass across the face of goal, where Fred deflects it into the path of Mane who's dispossessed by Shaw just as he was about to poke beyond De Gea!
23' Liverpool have all the momentum now and they race forward again as Firmino releases Andy Robertson down the left flank, but Wan-Bissaka dispossesses him with a perfectly measured slide challenge.
21' Pereira is okay to continue and the game restarts with Liverpool patiently rolling it around the back four.
20' Pereira is down now clutching his ankle and it looks as though there'll be a brief delay for him to receive treatment.
18' Alexander-Arnold hits in another dangerous free-kick that United scramble away for a corner, before the away side finally manage to clear their lines from the next delivery.
16' Well, Man Utd had set up cautiously to begin this game and the last thing they needed was to concede a simple early goal to disrupt their plans. You'd expect them to try and settle the game down now, before committing more men forward in search of an equaliser later on.
T. Alexander-Arnold
Assist
Liverpool
14' Liverpool had hardly threatened United before that corner, but all it took to get the opening goal was an enticing delivery from Alexander-Arnold and the aerial prowess of Van Dijk to finish it off!
V. van Dijk
Goal
Liverpool
14' LIVERPOOL TAKE THE LEAD! 1-0! Alexander-Arnold whips in the resulting corner towards the six-yard box where Van Dijk rises highest to power a towering header beyond a motionless De Gea!
14' The hosts force another corner through Oxlade-Chamberlain as they look to build the pressure on United.
12' Liverpool may be in total control of first position in the Premier League, but there's still plenty riding on this game. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 38 Premier League games - the third-longest such run in the competition’s history. The two longer runs (Arsenal 49, Chelsea 40) were both ended by Manchester United, who'd dearly love to do the same again today.
10' Pereira receives the ball in a pocket of space in the Liverpool half, before playing a delightful first-time flick through to James and momentarily it looks as though the attacker might be in behind again! However, Andy Robertson recovers superbly once more to slide in and dispossess James.
9' Alexander-Arnold swings in a devilish delivery from the resulting set-piece, which drifts all the way to Mane who glances a header a couple of yards wide of the far post.
N. Matić
Yellow Card
Manchester United
8' Matic is booked after catching Wijnaldum with a high foot.
7' Liverpool win their first corner of the game and they work it short, before the away side clear the eventual delivery back towards the centre-circle.
5' This has been a bright start from United! They push forward again with Matic who incisively slips James in behind the Liverpool defence, however Andy Robertson does well to scamper back and block his cross away from harm.
4' The away side manage to win a free-kick in a dangerous area after Mane trips James. Pereira eventually swings in the delivery, but it's under-hit and Liverpool are able to clear it back into the United half.
2' United win a throw-in deep inside the Liverpool half after a poor clearance from Alisson, but the hosts press them away from goal and they're forced to rebuild from the back with De Gea.
1' Manchester United get the first half underway.
The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick off is just seconds away!
Despite their recent superiority over Man Utd in the league and Europe, Liverpool have found today’s opponents incredibly difficult over the last few years - since completing a league double over United in 2013-14, Liverpool have won just one of their 11 Premier League games against them..
United, on the other hand, make three changes following their FA Cup replay win over Wolves in the week: Romero, Mata and Greenwood all make way with De Gea, Shaw and Pereira coming in.
Liverpool are unchanged from the side that defeated Tottenham 1-0 in London, however Fabinho and Matip both return to the bench after injury layoffs.
SUBS: Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly, Mason Greenwood, Jesse Lingard, Sergio Romero, Juan Mata, Phil Jones.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw; Fred, Nemanja Matic; Daniel James, Andreas Pereira, Brandon Williams; Anthony Martial.
SUBS: Takumi Minamino, Curtis Jones, Adam Lallana, Divock Origi, Adrian, Fabinho, Joel Matip.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson; Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson, Georginino Wijnaldum; Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane.
Manchester United arrive in somewhat more inconsistent fashion, as they look for another three points to push towards a top-four spot. They have three wins and two defeats in their last six, but more importantly, they’ll be desperate to hand their bitter rivals a first league defeat this season.
Hello and welcome to live commentary of this Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Manchester United. The hosts enter this one with a seemingly unassailable lead at the top of the table and with imperious recent form to match; they’ve won 12 league games in a row, and in fact, the last time they even dropped points was in the return fixture against today’s opponents.
