In the end, it was all far too easy for Chelsea, who marked Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge by handing their former boss his heaviest ever Premier League defeat. His United certainly didn't deserve to come away with anything, as they looked second best from start to finish and were made to pay for several terrible mistakes at the back, all of which Chelsea took advantage of with a determined and spirited display.
FULL-TIME: CHELSEA 4-0 MANCHESTER UNITED
90' + 3' Thumping strike by Rojo! The Argentine full-back cuts inside from the left wing and heads towards the Chelsea box before firing a rocket of a shot towards the top right-hand corner of the net, but Courtois pulls off an acrobatic diving save to deny the substitute a late goal.
90' + 2' Vital interception by Luiz! Pogba and Rojo link up well over on the left-hand side of the Chelsea box before the Argentine cuts a pass back into the path of Ibrahimovic, who is in a great position in front of goal, but the Swedish striker is unable to get a shot away after being brilliantly dispossessed by Luiz.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be three minutes of added time.
89' Chalobah cuts inside from the right flank and carves out a pocket of space for himself before unleashing a low strike towards goal, but it's sent straight into the hands of De Gea and the goalkeeper is easily able to stop the effort.
87' Willian weaves through the middle of the pitch on a great run as he easily beats Herrera. He then pokes a pass over to Moses, who quickly cuts inside from the right wing and into the penalty area, but his low shot fails to beat the outstretched foot of Blind.
85' The visitors are still trying to push forward as they search for a late goal, but, understandably, they're lacking the intensity and belief needed to break down a very impressive Chelsea back line. The hosts' defence have barely had to work this afternoon, as poor service has left Ibrahimovic largely isolated in front of goal for most of the day.
83' United patiently pass the ball around before a chipped pass from Pogba finds Rojo inside the Chelsea penalty area over on the left-hand side, but the Argentine is beaten to the ball by Azpilicueta and ends up catching the Spaniard with an outstretched boot, resulting in a free-kick for the hosts.
81' Ibrahimovic goes close! A lovely lofted pass from Mata finds Ibrahimovic with his back to goal inside the penalty area. The Swedish striker brings the ball down brilliantly and spins before shooting, but his thumping close-range effort is pushed away by a great save from Courtois.
79' Valencia gets himself into a good position over on the right wing before swinging a curling cross into the heart of the Chelsea penalty area, but Ibrahimovic sticks out an arm as he jumps for the ball and ends up catching Luiz on the side of the face, resulting in a free-kick for the home side.
Willian
E. Hazard
Chelsea
78' And the second is Willian, who replaces Hazard. The Belgian has been magnificent today and receives a standing ovation from the home fans as he makes his way off the pitch.
M. Batshuayi
Diego Costa
Chelsea
78' With little over 10 minutes left to play, Chelsea have decided to make a double substitution. The first player to come on is Batshuayi, who takes the place of Costa.
77' United come back again as they try to find a late consolation goal, but, once again, Matic is there to cut out the danger on the edge of the penalty area before being fouled and winning his side a free-kick. The visitors just can't seem to carve out a clear-cut chance on goal, no matter what they try to do.
P. Pogba
Yellow Card
Manchester United
75' A half-hearted United attacking move comes to an end, allowing Matic to break forward on a quick counter-attack. His run is quickly brought to an end, however, as Pogba sticks out a foot and cynically trips the Serbian to the ground.
74' Costa picks up the ball midway inside the United half of the pitch and immediately flies forward on a marauding run. He weaves his way past two United players and heads into the penalty area before shooting, but his low strike fails to beat De Gea.
73' Opportunity for Ibrahimovic! United win themselves a free-kick over on the left wing, which is sent short to Blind. The full-back quickly whips a cross into the heart of the penalty area that finds Ibrahimovic in front of goal, but the striker is closed down and fails to send his headed effort on target.
N. Chalobah
Pedro
Chelsea
71' Pedro makes his way off the pitch to be replaced by Chalobah for the final 20 minutes of the game.
N. Kanté
Goal
Chelsea
70' GOAL! Kante has scored his first goal for Chelsea! The Frenchman cuts past Pogba with ease in the middle of the pitch and darts towards the edge of the United penalty area. Smalling is there and tries to dispossess the midfielder, but he almost falls over his feet trying to do so and allows the former Leicester man to beat him with ease before slotting a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Chelsea are running riot!
Pedro
Assist
Chelsea
70' Assist Pedro Eliezer Rodríguez Ledesma
68' Matic picks up the ball in the middle of the pitch and immediately whips a lofted pass over to the left-hand side of the United penalty area. Alonso breaks forward and just about manages to latch on to the pass, but just as he does he's dispossessed by a good tackle from Valencia.
Marcos Alonso
Yellow Card
Chelsea
66' Pogba twists and turns deep down the right wing before being dragged to the ground by Alonso, who gives away a free-kick and receives a yellow card for his poor challenge on the Frenchman. Mata's cross from the set-piece is whipped into the box and finds Rojo, but the defender's headed effort fails to trouble Courtois.
A. Martial
J. Lingard
Manchester United
65' With 25 minutes left to go, Mourinho has decided to make his final change of the game as he brings on Martial to take the place of Lingard.
64' United try to push forward on an attacking down the right wing as they desperately attempt to get back into the game, but Matic is there to out-muscle and dispossess Pogba as the Frenchman tries to get past the halfway line. It hasn't been the Frenchman's day thus far.
N. Matić
Assist
Chelsea
62' Matic's pass was a wonderful one and picked out Hazard perfectly, but, once again, the United defence fell asleep and failed to track the run of Hazard, who beat them all far too easily.
E. Hazard
Goal
Chelsea
62' GOAL! It's 3-0! Nobody closes down Hazard and allows him to work the ball over to Matic, who slots a lovely pass into the penalty area and back to the Belgian, who then fires a great strike into the bottom right-hand corner of the net to increase Chelsea's lead.
61' Rojo gets himself into a good position deep down the left wing after beating Moses near to the byline, and he then fires a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Ibrahimovic rises high and tries to meet the ball in front of goal, but he's unable to make contact with it and the danger is dealt with by Azpilicueta.
59' United come back again and work the ball around well before winning themselves a corner over on the left wing. Mata's corner causes Luiz a few problems before the ball bounces over to the right flank, where Rashford wins another corner that, this time, is easily dealt with by the hosts.
58' Lingard gets himself into a good position just outside of the Chelsea penalty area before firing a rocket of a low shot towards the bottom right-hand corner of the net, but Courtois gets down quickly to parry the effort away with a strong save.
56' Chance for Hazard! A half-hearted United attack comes to an end, allowing Chelsea to hit them on a quick counter-attack. Moses flies through the middle of the pitch on a marauding run before teeing up Hazard on the edge of the penalty area, but the Belgian's low shot is deflected out of play by a vital block from Smalling.
54' Rashford darts down the left wing and picks up the ball in a pocket of space before spinning and curling a cross over to the far post. The delivery is an excellent one and almost finds Pogba, but the Frenchman is unable to meet the ball on the edge of the six-yard box.
M. Rojo
E. Bailly
Manchester United
52' Bailly gingerly limps off the pitch to be replaced by Rojo. The Argentine will go to left-back and Blind will move into the middle of the United defence.
51' Things look to have gone from bad to worse for United, as Bailly is now down on the floor clutching the back of his leg. The Ivorian defender looks to have pulled a muscle whilst stretching to dispossess Hazard, and it seems as if his day is over already.
50' Hazard twists and turns as he weaves his way towards the United penalty area on a great run. He tries to play a quick one-two after reaching the box, but the Belgian is brought down off the ball by Bailly. The referee doesn't agree with the attacking midfielder that it was a foul, however, and allows play to continue.
48' Costa scores, but it's ruled out for offside! Chelsea win themselves a corner over on the right wing, which is sent short and worked over to Kante. The midfielder unleashes a thumping strike from the edge of the penalty area that deflects into the path of Costa, who then curls the ball into the back of the net from close range, but he's several yards offside and doesn't even celebrate.
Mata
M. Fellaini
Manchester United
46' United have made one substitution during the break, with Mata coming on to replace Fellaini.
46' And we're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
It's been the perfect opening 45 minutes for Chelsea, who have looked in complete control and head into the half-time break with a well-deserved two-goal lead. United have been all over the place at the back and have struggled to deal with the home side's 3-4-3 formation, with both wing-backs causing problems whenever they push forward. At the other end, Ibrahimovic and Lingard have both had one chance on goal each, but, bar that, the visitors have really struggled.
HALF-TIME: CHELSEA 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED
45' + 3' Late chance for Costa! Pedro is fouled by Fellaini on the halfway line, resulting in a free-kick for Chelsea in an advantageous position. Luiz take it quickly and sends it over the United back line and into the path of Costa, but the Spaniard is unable to fire his low shot past Bailly after initially getting the better of the centre-back.
45' + 2' And now Rashford is presented with a chance! United come back again quickly before Valencia picks up a loose ball and cuts it back to Rashford on the edge of the box, but the teenager's first-time half-volley isn't hit cleanly and bounces comfortably over the top of the crossbar.
45' + 1' Valencia, who has arguably been one of United's best players going forward, gets himself into a great position down the right wing before firing another dangerous cross into the heart of the Chelsea penalty area, but Luiz dives in front of the ball to stop it from finding a red shirt in front of goal.
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be two minutes of added time.
44' Bailly picks up the ball on the halfway line and quickly threads a through-ball past a sea of blue shirts and into the path of Lingard, but the centre-back's pass is forward is overhit and ends up bouncing harmlessly out of play for a Chelsea goal-kick.
43' Hazard cuts inside from the left wing after beating Fellaini and then pokes a pass over to Costa. The striker spins on the edge of the United penalty area and beats Smalling twice before looking to shoot, but he holds on to the ball for slightly too long and ends up losing his footing before he can unleash a shot.
David Luiz
Yellow Card
Chelsea
41' Ouch! Luiz flies into Fellaini and catches the midfielder on the knee with a high-footed challenge, resulting in the United players all screaming to the referee for a red card. It was certainly a reckless challenge and one that could have resulted in the Brazilian being given his marching orders, but the man in charge decides to show him a yellow instead.
40' Valencia crashes into Hazard and sends the Belgian down to the ground, resulting in a free-kick for Chelsea. It's sent short and worked over to the right wing, where it once again finds the Belgian, but he's out-muscled by Bailly and is unable to send a cross into the box.
38' Rashford, who has seen little of the ball thus far, comes into the game as he battles with Moses down the left flank. He does well to beat the wing-back and cuts inside before trying to pick out Fellaini on the edge of the Chelsea penalty area, but his pass is poor and sails past the Belgian and out of play for a throw-in.
37' Herrera picks out Valencia and the full-back quickly whips a dangerous cross into the middle of the Chelsea penalty area. It's once again sent towards Ibrahimovic, but Moses rises high and does well to deal with the danger so that the Swedish striker is unable to send a header towards goal.
35' United patiently pass the ball around as they try to carve out a chance down the left wing, but Chelsea have enough bodies back to deal with the danger and Pogba is dispossessed before a Blind foul on Pedro results in a free-kick for the home side.
33' Chelsea push plenty of bodies forward on another determined attacking move before winning themselves a free-kick in a dangerous position over on the right wing. Hazard curls a cross into the penalty area, where several blue shirts are waiting near to the penalty spot, but the cross is poor and fails to trouble the United defence.
31' It's all Chelsea at the moment as they continue to comfortably hold on to the ball inside the United half of the pitch. It's been a really difficult opening half an hour for the visitors, who have created very few chances up front and are struggling to deal with the Chelsea wing-backs whenever he break forward quickly.
E. Bailly
Yellow Card
Manchester United
29' Once again, Costa causes problems with his strength and power as he breaks into the United half of the pitch and towards the penalty area, but he's cynically fouled from behind by Bailly and wins the home side a free-kick before the centre-back is shown a yellow card.
28' Chance for Lingard! A thumping 25-yard strike from Herrera is well saved by Courtois, but the goalkeeper can only push the ball over to Lingard. The winger darts into the penalty area and picks up the ball before firing a follow-up towards goal, but the Belgian smothers the danger and parries it out for a corner.
27' Costa goes close again! Once again, Blind defends poorly and allows Hazard to whip another dangerous low cross into the heart of the United penalty area. This time it finds Costa, but the Spaniard's first-time, flicked effort fails to beat De Gea at the near post.
26' Chelsea almost make it 3-0! Blind is caught sleeping on the ball on the edge of the United box and has the ball stolen from under his nose by Pedro. The Spaniard breaks towards the byline before firing a low pass across the face of goal, but De Gea sticks out a foot to stop it from finding Costa in front of goal.
25' Costa powers his way through the middle of the pitch and into the United half, but as soon as he passes the halfway line he's pushed to the ground by Fellaini and wins Chelsea a free-kick. It's taken quickly and sent to Hazard, but the Belgian is dispossessed by Blind on the edge of the penalty area before he can get a shot away.
24' United push forward quickly through Valencia, who once again sends a dangerous cross into the box. It finds Ibrahimovic, who nods the ball down to Rashford on the edge of the penalty area, but the youngster's effort on goal isn't at all convincing and fails to beat Luiz in front of him.
23' A poor pass from Ibrahimovic fails to find Herrera, allowing Pedro to fly forward on a quick counter-attack. The Spaniard sprints into the United half of the pitch on a great run before trying to tee up Costa, but his pass is poor and fails to find the striker in a good position.
G. Cahill
Goal
Chelsea
21' GOAL! It's 2-0 to Chelsea! The home side patiently pass the ball around deep inside the United half of the pitch before Kante forces Blind into poking the ball out for a corner. Hazard steps up and curls a great cross over to Matic, who heads the ball off the chest of Blind and into the path of Cahill, who then beats De Gea with a thumping volley from close range.
19' Rashford battles down the left wing before winning United another corner. This time, Blind's cross from the set-piece is sent slightly deeper than before and finds the head of Pogba, but the Frenchman's cushioned header fails to pick out a red shirt and instead bounces into the hands of Courtois.
18' Almost lovely play by Chelsea! Costa flies into the United penalty area and meets the ball in front of goal before sending a back-heeled pass over to Pedro. The attacking midfielder darts forward and tries to meet the ball to shoot, but Costa's pass is sent slightly behind him and he's unable to do so.
16' After a few minutes on the back foot, United are able to string together a series of passes as they try to put some pressure on the Chelsea back line, but they're unable to find a way through the sea of blue shirts in front of them and quickly lose possession.
14' Great strike by Hazard! The corner is sent short to Pedro, who immediately whips a low, bouncing cross over to the edge of the box. Hazard is waiting in a pocket of space and receives the ball before immediately firing a first-time strike towards the bottom right-hand corner of the net, but his effort on goal ends up flying marginally wide of the near post.
13' Hazard picks out Pedro on the edge of the United penalty area, and the Spaniard immediately beats Smalling before poking a volleyed pass over to Costa. The striker flies into the penalty area and does well to meet the ball in an advantageous position, but he's dispossessed by a strong tackle from Bailly just as he's about to shoot, and the ball bounces out for a corner.
12' Costa is brought down as he powers through the United half of the pitch, but the referee waves play on and allows Matic to break forward and win the hosts a corner. Hazard steps up and whips a great ball towards Costa on the edge of the six-yard box, but Bailly is just about able to cut out the danger and stop the cross from finding the Spanish striker.
10' Azpilicueta cuts inside from the right flank before curling a lovely cross right on to the head of Hazard, but there's slightly too much power behind the pass and it ends up deflecting off the Belgian and several yards over the United goal.
9' Ibrahimovic goes close! Valencia darts down the right wing on a marauding run before firing a great cross over to the far post. Ibrahimovic rises high above Azpilicueta and meets the ball well before sending a header towards goal, but it ends up flying just a yard or so over the top of the crossbar.
7' United embark on a good attacking move down the left flank, with Pogba playing an important role just outside of the penalty area. The Frenchman plays a quick one-two with Ibrahimovic before trying to get the better of Moses, but the wing-back comes out on top and successfully cuts out the danger.
5' United push forward on their first attacking move of the game through Lingard, who bursts forward before winning the visitors a corner over on the left wing. The set-piece initially fails to trouble Chelsea before Hazard is caught on possession and allows Rashford to whip a low cross towards Ibrahimovic, but Luiz sticks out a foot to stop the ball from finding the Swedish striker.
3' Chelsea move the ball around with purpose as they try to find a quick second goal against a United side that look incredibly shaky at the back. A curling cross is eventually curled in from the right wing and almost finds Costa in front of goal, but Bailly is just about able to cut out the danger with an unconvincing clearance.
Pedro
Yellow Card
Chelsea
1' As he celebrated the goal, Pedro's excitement saw him run into the crowd and earn himself an early booking. I'm sure he won't mind too much.
Marcos Alonso
Assist
Chelsea
1' Alonso showed great vision to pick out Pedro on the edge of the penalty area, but United's back line were all over the place. Blind and Smalling both switched off before De Gea came out of his box far too quickly, and without the conviction needed to dispossess the Spaniard.
Pedro
Goal
Chelsea
1' GOAL! What a start by Chelsea! With just 30 seconds on the clock, Pedro flies past both Blind and Smalling far too easily before rounding De Gea, who rushes out to deal with the danger but is unable to do so and gifts the Spaniard with a chance to poke the ball into the back of an empty net. What a terrible mix-up by the visitors!
1' And we're off! Chelsea get us underway, attacking from left to right.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Antonio Conte has decided to name an unchanged Chelsea side to the one that started the win against Leicester last weekend, whilst United boss Jose Mourinho has made six alterations to the side that featured against Fenerbahce in their last outing, with Antonio Valencia, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic coming into the starting line-up to replace Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw, Michael Carrick, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney, the latter of whom is injured and hasn’t travelled today.
Manchester United substitutes: Romero, Rojo, Darmian, Young, Carrick, Mata, Martial.
Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Blind; Herrera, Fellaini; Lingard, Pogba, Rashford; Ibrahimovic.
Chelsea substitutes: Begovic, Aina, Terry, Chalobah, Oscar, Willian, Batshuayi.
Chelsea XI (3-4-3): Courtois; Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill; Moses, Kante, Matic, Alonso; Pedro, Costa, Hazard.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Chelsea have recent history on their side, despite both of last season’s meetings ending in draws. The corresponding fixture finished 1-1 after Diego Costa netted a late equaliser, and it’s now almost exactly four years since United last won against the Blues. That game, on this very ground, was a feisty encounter that saw the hosts reduced to nine men.
Unlike their opponents today, United were in action during the week and picked up a comfortable, morale-boosting 4-1 win at home to Fenerbahce, meaning that they are now unbeaten in their last six games. However, three of those have come in both the EFL Cup and Europa League, whilst their last two league clashes ended in draws against Stoke City and Liverpool.
Both teams start the day away from the Champions League qualification places, but a win for either will help send them towards what has become a tightly-congested top four. For Chelsea, a disappointing blip in August was brought to an end by back-to-back victories against Hull City and Leicester City, whilst United have won just one of their last five league games.
Mourinho’s departure from the West London club came after the worst ever start to a campaign by a defending Premier League champion, but the self-anointed “Special One” is still fondly thought of in these parts of the capital. However, with just two points separating the sides heading into today’s clash, it’s set to be a fiery and hard-fought contest.
10 months after his second spell at Chelsea came to a bitterly disappointing end, Jose Mourinho is back at Stamford Bridge once again, but this time as an opposition manager for the first time since March 2010, when he successfully guided his Inter side to a 1-0 victory against Carlo Ancelotti’s Blues.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
