That's all from us today folks, we hope you enjoyed the game!
Southampton failed to get going in the second half and a couple of mistakes at the back cost them. The closest the came to scoring was right at the end of the second half, when Pope had to deny Vestergaard from close range following a goalmouth scramble. Southampton will be hoping to bounce back next weekend, when they return to St Mary's to face Liverpool. Meanwhile Burnley travel to Arsenal.
Burnley get their season off to the perfect start with a 3-0 victory over Southampton at Turf Moor after a brace from Barnes and a solo strike from Gudmundsson. It took a while for the game to get going, but the Clarets finally got the breakthrough midway through the second half, after a big mistake from Vestergaard allowed Barnes to go through on goal and he fired Burnley ahead. The striker then doubled his sides lead seven minutes later with a fine finish from close range following a deep cross from the left by Pieters, before Gudmundsson wrapped up the win, curling the ball into the far corner of the goal after a lovely solo run.
90' + 2' Southampton are dominating possession in the final few minutes but they don't look like threatening the Burnley goal, who have defended well throughout and restricted the Saints attack.
90' There will be a minimum of three minutes added time played.
88' Burnley are starting to take their time with any set pieces and throw-ins, just running the clock down to try and clinch an opening day 3-0 victory.
86' Can Southampton pull a goal back late on? Just over four minutes left to play. Burnley look very comfortable at the back and will now want to keep a clean sheet.
A. Lennon
D. McNeil
84' The other Burnley substitution sees McNeil come off the pitch and he has been replaced by Lennon.
J. Rodriguez
A. Barnes
84' There will be no hat-trick for Barnes today as he is replaced by Rodriguez, who is making his second debut for Burnley today after rejoining the club this summer.
82' SAVE! Pope is called into action to deny Vestergaard from close range. Ward-Prowse whips a corner into the box, which bounces dangerously around the area and Burnley fail to clear it and the ball lands at the feet of Vestergaard, who drills a shot towards the near post but Pope makes a good save with his feet.
81' Southampton are pushing forward in search of what will surely only be a consolation goal now, as there is less then 10 minutes left to play here.
79' HUGE MISTAKE! Hojbjerg with a terrible pass back to his keeper with Barnes lurking so close by and the striker manages to get to the ball first, he's just a couple of yards out and goes for goal himself from a tight angle, but Gunn gets back and pushes the ball out of play for a corner. Almost an opening day hat-trick for Barnes!
77' Barnes netted his 34th Premier League goal for Burnley, 14 more than any other player for the club.
J. Guðmundsson
75' GOOOAAALLL! It's three! Gudmundsson extends Burnley's lead, they are now 3-0 up! It's a lovely run from the winger, he nicks the ball off Bertrand and races through on goal, he only has Gunn to beat, cuts onto his left foot and then curls the ball into the far of the net. Superb finish.
P. Højbjerg
J. Stephens
73' The other substitution sees Stephens come off the pitch and he has been replaced by Hojbjerg.
S. Boufal
C. Adams
73' Saints make a double substitution following the second Burnley goal, with Adams replaced by Boufal.
E. Pieters
70' Pieters spots Wood and Barnes making runs into the box, he manages to whip the ball past Vestergaard at the front post and it falls perfectly to Barnes who was waiting behind him.
A. Barnes
70' GOOOAAALLL! Burnley double their lead! Barnes once again with the goal for the hosts to make it 2-0. It's another deep cross by Pieters from the left and Barnes is allowed to sprint into the box completely unmarked at the far post and he just watches the ball onto his foot and powers it into the back of the net. Gunn had no chance of saving that.
68' Burnley look in total control now, keeping the ball well and Saints are struggling to get a touch of it, nevermind try and find an equaliser. However, there is still plenty of time left on the clock to change that.
M. Obafemi
D. Ings
66' Southampton have made their first substitution of the game as Ings comes off the pitch and he has been replaced by Obafemi.
65' Vestergaard certainly won't want to see that goal back any time soon, he falls to the floor and allows Barnes through on goal.
E. Pieters
63' It was a long and hopeful ball forward by Pieters towards Barnes, that should've been dealt with by the Saints defence, but they failed to do so and Barnes capitalised.
A. Barnes
63' GOOOAAALLL! Burnley finally break the deadlock, Barnes with the goal to make it 1-0! Pieters plays a deep crossfield ball and Vestergaard misreads the flight of the ball and misses his clearance, which allows Barnes to sprint through on goal and he then drills the ball past Gunn and into the back of the net from the edge of the box.
62' The last five Premier League meetings between Burnley and Southampton have produced just six goals (four for Burnley, two for Southampton).
60' As both teams are pushing forward, the game is starting to become more stretched and gaps are starting to open up at the back. Redmond looks lively for Southampton, he has been the visitors best attacking player so far.
58' Ings has been very quiet for Southampton today, he has struggled to get involved in the game as the Saints haven't been able to get the ball into his feet and the Burnley defence are winning everything in the air.
56' The game has kicked into life in the last few minutes, with Burnley starting to play the ball around the pitch quicker and show more attacking intent.
54' Good effort! Pope plays a long ball up top and Wood gets on the end of it, getting all the way into the Saints box and then fires a low shot towards the near post, but the angle is too tight and it goes into the sidenetting.
53' Bertrand steps up to take it with his left-foot, trying to curl the ball into the top corner, but he gets too much on it and it flies high over the crossbar.
53' There are three Saints players lined up to take this free-kick, Ward-Prowse, Bertrand and Redmond...
52' Free-kick to Southampton in a very dangerous position after Redmond is caught late by Tarkowski, right on the edge of the penalty area. The winger just managed to lay the ball off to a team-mate before the Clarets centre-back slid in and brought him down.
50' Eight of the nine Premier League meetings between Burnley and Southampton have been goalless at half-time (89%) – the highest percentage among all Premier League fixtures to have been played at least six times.
48' Burnley have started the second half on top, keeping the ball in the Saints half and they've got their opponents penned back in these opening few minutes of the second period.
46' The second half is underway!
Both teams have struggled to keep the ball at times and really stretch their opponents, improvements from both sides are needed in the second half, if someone is going to break the deadlock.
It's goalless at the break between Burnley and Southampton at Turf Moor, with few chances to break the deadlock. Saints went close just two minutes in, after Adams almost turned the ball home from close range, after an excellent cross into the penalty area by Valery, but he just couldn't quite turn it into the back of the net. Gudmundsson went closest for Burnley, his low shot whistled past the Saints post. Burnley had a goal ruled out for offside, as Wood made his run in-behind too early and the linesmans flag went up straight away, with VAR confirming that was the correct decision. There was another VAR check after a high challenge by Adams caught Mee late, but no red card was given.
45' + 2' No real urgency from either side to push forward and break the deadlock at the end of this first half. It's been a very scrappy final few minutes, with a couple of wild tackles flying in.
45' There will be a minimum of three minutes added time played.
43' SAVE! Pope is called into action to deny Redmond. The winger doesn't give up on a deep ball that seems to be heading out of play, he keeps it alive, cuts inside into the box and works some space for the shot, which Pope has to tip over the crossbar. Excellent effort from Redmond and an equally impressive stop from the Burnley keeper.
41' Another stoppage in play as Bertrand is down receiving some treatment on the pitch after he is clattered into by Gudmundsson, a late challenge by the Burnley winger. However, the Saints left-back looks fine to continue.
39' There has been a lack of quality on show so far today from both teams, with little separating them in midfield.
37' Not long left to play until the end of the first half now, can either side break the deadlock before the half-time whistle?
35' Southampton haven’t won their opening Premier League fixture in a season since 2013-14, when they defeated West Brom away (1-0). They have since lost one and drawn the last four opening day matches they have played.
33' Almost! McNeil plays a lovely ball behind the Saints defence which Wood races onto the end of it, but his first touch is too heavy and Gunn is able to gather.
31' VAR is used to check the tackle by Adams on Mee as his foot was high, however, he won the initial ball and then the follow through catched Mee. Nothing given.
29' Injury worry here for Burnley as Mee is down on the pitch after a high tackle from Adams. The striker catches the Burnley skipper high and scrapes down his leg, but it looks like he will be fine to continue.
27' CLOSE! Gudmundsson with Burnley's best chance of the game so far. They work it well in the box and Lowton picks out Gudmundsson on the edge of the area, who fires a shot towards the bottom corner, but it flies inches past the post.
25' Burnley are starting to pick up the pace here, midway through the first half and it remains goalless between the two sides at Turf Moor.
23' Neither side are doing a good job at keeping the ball at the moment, the tempo is slow after the disallowed Burnley goal.
21' The pace of the game has dropped in the last couple of minutes, the rain is lashing down and making it difficult for both teams to get the ball down and keep possession.
19' Burnley are unbeaten in their last five competitive meetings with Southampton (all in the Premier League), winning twice and drawing three times.
17' Wood continued to sprint into the box and squared the ball to Barnes at the far post, who slots the ball into the back of the net. However, VAR showed that the linesman had made the correct decision.
17' GOAL RULED OUT! Burnley have the ball in the back of the net, but it's been ruled out for offside and, after a VAR check, the decision stands. Wood is offside as he makes a run in behind the Saints defence, Stephens slips as he goes to clear the ball and the linesman then flags Wood offside.
15' The visitors are keeping the ball well now, but it's all in the middle of the pitch and their own half, they are struggling to get Adams and Ings involved up top.
13' Good effort! The ball falls nicely to Ward-Prowse on the edge of the Burnley box and the midfilder drills it towards goal, but Pope reads it all the way and makes a comfortable save.
11' We've still only had one goalscoring chance here at Turf Moor, the game has settled down and both teams are trying to find their rhythm.
9' Southampton win the first corner of the game, after Mee has to put the ball out of play to prevent Adams from breaking into the box. However, Burnley defend the set piece well, the rebound then falls to Romeu on the edge of the box, but his shot towards goal is wild and flies high over the bar.
7' Almost an embarrassing moment for Gunn in the Saints goal! The keeper comes out to gather a deep ball into the box, but he doesn't read the flight of it and almost carries it out of his own area. A few Burnley players appeal, but the referee allows play to continue.
6' The hosts are just edging the early possession here, but Southampton are pressing them high and not allowing them time and space in their half. A scrappy opening few minutes.
4' Burnley are now enjoying a little spell of pressure, they've got Southampton penned deep inside their own half, with Wood and Barnes winning the majority of the high balls.
2' CLOSE! Adams almost puts Southampton ahead after just two minutes! Valery whips a superb cross into the Burnley box, between the defence and keeper, both of whom fail to deal with it and the ball falls straight to Adams, who tries to poke it into the net with an outstretched boot, but his effort flies just wide of the post.
1' We're underway!
The teams are out at Turf Moor and kick-off is just a few minutes away. Stay tuned for all of the match action!
