It was a mixed bag of performances as the green and gold laboured to victory and qualification for the knockout stage

Australia sealed their path to the Asian Cup round-of-16 with a 3-2 win over Syria in a match filled with controversial moments.

Graham Arnold's men finished second in the group behind Jordan thanks to goals from Awer Mabil, Chris Ikonomidis and Tom Rogic.

Several players stepped up when it counted but there was also some concerning performances.

Check out Goal's ratings for every Australian player below.

  • Maty Ryan Socceroos

    Mat Ryan

    Rating: 6/10

Made a great save just prior to Syria's opening goal and couldn't do much about the penalty.

However looked shaky with his distrubution and parried quite a few shots awkwardly.

  • Aziz Behich Socceroos

    Aziz Behich

    Rating: 5/10

Got up and down the left hand side plenty but just doesn't seem to make use of the ball in attack.

There must be a consideration to try Alex Gersbach as it appears the system does not suit Behich.

  • Milos Degenek

    Milos Degenek

    Rating: 7/10

Had plenty of Syrian pressure to deal with but coped well when the heat was on.

Will need to step it up as the Socceroos play stronger opponents.

  • Mark Milligan Socceroos

    Mark Milligan

    Rating: 5/10

Forced into defence with Sainsbury's suspension, Milligan looked shaky at the back and was lucky to not have conceded a penalty for handball.

Should slot back into midfield when Sainsbury returns for the round-of-16.

  • Rhyan Grant Socceroos

    Rhyan Grant

    Rating: 7/10

Worked tirelessly getting up and down the right flank to provide an attacking option.

Made a great run to take defenders away for Awer Mabil's goal.

Will get better with more experience and looks to have made the right back position his own.

  • Jackson Irvine Burton Albion

    Jackson Irvine

    Rating: 5/10

Given another opportunity to start in midfield but failed to excel without the freedom of Milligan sitting beside him.

Gave the ball away too often and was caught in possession many times.

Wasn't a strong attacking threat like the Palestine game.

  • Massimo Luongo

    Massimo Luongo

    Rating: 5/10

Put in an anonymous performance in midfield.

Hasn't had many chances in a Socceroos shirt recently but when he gets one, he doesn't seem to be taking it.

  • Chris Ikonomidis Socceroos

    Chris Ikonomidis

    Rating: 8/10

Two assists and a goal for Ikonomidis in another wonderful performance in attack.

Did make a few poor decisions when in good positions, but who can argue with his final output?

  • Socceroos Tom Rogic

    Tom Rogic

    Rating: 8/10

Australia's best player on the night.

Was the heartbeat of the green and gold midfield - constantly scheming and trying to get into dangerous positions.

Finished the game off with a wonderful strike in stoppage time.

  • Awer Mabil Socceroos

    Awer Mabil

    Rating: 8/10

What an absolutely stunning strike from the talented winger.

Constantly menaced the Syrian defenders and has come of age this tournament.

  • Jamie Maclaren Socceroos

    Jamie Maclaren

    Rating: 6/10

Had a couple of chances he should have done better with.

However his hold up and build up play was the best of any of his 10 Socceroos caps.

Will come under threat for a starting spot from Giannou.

  • Substitutes

    Apostolos Giannou: 7/10

Unlucky to not score with his shot that rebounded off the post. Looks lively and seems to fit the system better than Maclaren.

    Robbie Kruse: N/A

Came on late and didn't have much of an impact.

    Matt Jurman: N/A

Was used as defensive sub in stoppage time to help weather the Syrian storm.
