The Amakhosi legend has backed Akpeyi ahead of the Soweto Derby which will take place next weekend

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William Shongwe says Daniel Akpeyi must be thrown in the deep end in an eagerly anticipated clash against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby next weekend.

The retired keeper stated that the Nigerian player's arrival is good news for Chiefs as they have lost crucial matches due to Virgil Vries’ erratic goalkeeping.

“In the beginning when he made a blunder against (Mamelodi) Sundowns, I thought this was a once-off. And he bounced back with a clean sheet against (Bidvest) Wits,” said Shongwe to Independent Media.

“But then, against Cape Town City, “hayi...hayi hayi.” (No, no, no), it’s unforgivable. A goalkeeper is allowed to make one horror per season, but two in big games that he’s played, it’s a big concern,” added the legend.

Following another error on Wednesday night against Cape Town City, Amakhosi decided to sign Akpeyi from Chippa United as they look to avoid their third defeat to Pirates in all competitions this season.

The two teams will clash at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

“I don’t think it would be the best for him (Vries to play in the derby), because there’ll be that mistake working into his mind,” continued the TV pundit.

“Personally, I think it’s the time to sideline him so that he can get a break,” he reacted.

“Akpeyi has been a pillar of strength at Chippa (United). He brings all the experience from the international scene,” praised the legend.

“His game also has a chance to shoot up to where we’ve never seen it before. I don’t think there’s a problem (with him) being on board; in fact, I thought it was a great move. I’d say throw him in the deep end,” he concluded.
