Wellington Phoenix can't continue in its current form, says Robbie Slater

Former Socceroo Robbie Slater has welcomed reports that Wellington Phoenix are looking selling their A-League licence, declaring they cannot continue as they have been.

As first reported by The Covert Agent, Wellington's owner Robert Morrison has been meeting with football franchises in an attempt to sell his club's remaining two-year licence.

While any such deal will be difficult to pull off, Slater was happy to hear of the news and is adamant the club needs drastic change. 

"For me it's a bit of positive news because Wellington cannot continue in its current form," Slater said on Fox Sports.

"It's been absolutely, putting it bluntly, hopeless.

"We had the whole 'Save the Nix' campaign which lasted for a couple months and it's gone back to normal.

"I see this as a positive move, it's almost a little bit of expansion before expansion and I think it can give them a shot in the arm for next season."

Southern Expansion and Campbelltown are two franchises reported to have meet with Morrison in an attempt to secure an unlikely spot in the A-League. 

The Phoenix ended the 2017/18 season in ninth, avoiding a third wooden spoon in their history thanks to a 2-1 win over Melbourne City in their final game.
