Ulinzi Stars shocked Mathare United with a heavy beating at Afraha Stadium

A flawless first-half display saw Ulinzi Stars grab maximum points on Sunday against sorry Mathare United.

The Soldiers came into the match knowing three points might push them to the top five, with the 2008 champions aiming at getting a win to move out of the relegation zone. With Francis Kimanzi banned from the touchline, it was Salim Ali who was in control.

The ‘Slum boys’ started the match on a low note and were shocked in the second minute by winger Samuel Onyango, who left the goalkeeper for dead. It was a bad start for the Nairobi-based side.

With the visitors not settled, it was 2-0 up in the fifth minute, this time round Stephen Waruru finishing off Oliver Rutto's cross. The visitors looked disjointed against an experienced Ulinzi Stars side that passed the ball around seamlessly.

It was 3-0 within the first fifteen minutes, veteran Waruru netting his second as he pounced on Brian Birgen's deflected effort to put the ball past helpless Levis Opiyo as the home fans cheered on.

In the 26th minute, the ‘Slum boys’ pulled one back courtesy of Derrick Onyango whose volley caught goalkeeper James Saruni off-guard. It could have been worse for the visitors in the first half, but Waruru and Cliff Kasuti did not take their chances.

After the break, Mathare United tried to come back, but once again lack of experience came into play.

The visitors conceded a penalty in the 75th minute and Waruru rose to the occasion to score a hat-trick and put the game way past Mathare United’s reach. By the time Enosh Ochieng’ made it five, Mathare United had been reduced to chasing shadows.

Ulinzi Stars now have 12 points from six matches, but as for the visitors, it is another week in the relegation zone.
