Ubong Friday hails Akwa United’s determination in FC Ifeanyi Ubah draw

The Promise Keepers’ attacker has showered encomiums on their determined effort to pick a point against the Anambra Warriors

Akwa United’s Ubong Friday has hailed his side doggedness and determination after they left Nnewi with a point at the end of their Nigeria Professional Football League tie with FC Ifeanyiubah on Wednesday.

The Anambra Warriors were desperate for a home win after they lost their last two fixtures but Friday said in an interview they had to fight till the end of the match to ensure that they secure the point that enables them to remain on top of the league table.

“It was not an easy match. We had to fight seriously to ensure that we had a point. Nnewi has not always been a good place for us because we lost our last two games played there and we were determined to end our bad spell there,” Friday told Goal.

“Our coach (Abdu Maikaba) reminded us before the match that we came for a war and that we must remain focused throughout the game. He told us not to be deterred by the match officials and that we should just concentrate on the game.

“His words on encouragement and tactical prowess really helped us throughout the tie. The five stoppage time minutes the match officials were like 10 minutes because of the tension at the stadium but we braved the odd and are returning to Uyo with a point.

“We actually came to Nnewi for a win and we were on course when Cyril (Olisema) put us ahead with an early goal we defended throughout the first half but they still managed to get the equalizer which we couldn’t do anything about.”

The striker stressed that they would return back to Uyo with emphasis on how to plot the fall of Wikki Tourists on Sunday.

The Promise Keepers are first in the league standings with 13 points from six games and have gone four games unbeaten since their insipid 1-0 away loss to Go Round in Omoku on the second matchday.
