'Son of Africa but citizen of the world’ – Kanu, Drogba, Eto’o mourn Kofi Annan

Nwankwo Kanu, Samuel Eto’o, Mutiu Adepoju and Didier Drogba have reacted to the death of African leader Kofi Annan.

According to a statement released by his foundation, Annan passed away at a hospital in Bern, Switzerland after a short illness at the age of 80.

The Ghanaian diplomat served as the United Nations Secretary-General from 1997 to 2006 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

Following the news of his death, football stars across the continent took to social media to mourn Annan and eulogise his humanitarian deeds.

"Tolerance is a virtue that makes peace possible. Peace, another great virtue to which he has dedicated his life," Eto'o wrote on Instagram.

"Son of Africa but citizen of the world, Kofi Annan knew throughout an exceptional career, to play the mediators without ever tainting its integrity. His disappearance is an immense loss for a continent of which he has been an excellent representative."

"Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family -Koffi Annan- Rest In Peace to a wise man," Drogba wrote on Instagram.

"RIP Koffi Annan. Sad, Sad," Kanu wrote on Instagram.
