Roger Feutmba: Mamelodi Sundowns' best is yet to come

With Mamelodi Sundowns set to return to the field of play two weeks from now, legendary midfielder Roger Feutmba feels coach Pitso Mosimane will welcome the break.

Feutmba told Goal that Mosimane has a great team, but added that he will need time for his new players to buy into his philosophy.

“Firstly, we all know that they have signed good players and there is no doubt about their quality. They are slowly showing their worth already,” Feutmba told Goal.

“I think the coach is aware that he needs time to see his new players finding themselves in his new philosophy. They are in a new environment and they need to adjust in understanding their teammates,” he added.

“The technical team is rebuilding and trying to find the right combinations after the departure of Percy Tau and others. It becomes very difficult to build a new team because that needs time, but there are good signs that Sundowns will go back to the team we all know,” said the Cameroonian.

Fresh from a trip to KwaZulu-Natal where they drew 3-3 against AmaZulu on Sunday and beat Golden Arrows 1-0 on Wednesday night, the Brazilians will now prepare to face Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday, October 03.

“Normally, you will see clubs playing friendlies with such a break to make sure the guys are fit and for the new players to settle down and gain confidence in how the coach wants them to play,” he said.

“Even though Sundowns are not bad as far as their game and results are concerned, we all know they are not there yet,” responded the Douala-born legend.

“We are yet to see the best of Sundowns because there are new players. We know Andile's (Jali) quality but he is in a new club and he must settle and adjust. He is coming in nicely and I am confident they will be good,” expressed Feutmba.

Moreover, coach Mosimane went to KZN without Denis Onyango, Themba Zwane as well as Gaston Sirino, and Feutmba believes the three players were missed dearly.

“I think the midfield struggled against AmaZulu and we all know what Zwane has done for Sundowns recently - he is one of the key players and his injury is a blow,” he continued.

“Yes, there are good keepers at Sundowns, but we know what Onyango brings to the team. Sundowns is a team that plays from the back and it becomes difficult for them when he is not there,” noted Feutmba.

“Even the defence and the entire team feels confident because they can count on his leadership, his organisational skills and experience, but these things are part of football where you don't have all your players and there is quality to keep the team going,” he told Goal on Friday.

“There is quality in that team, but they looked shaky in the midfield when Zwane and Sirino are missing. All in all, the break will help Sundowns and I believe they will be good after the break,” concluded Feutmba.
