Overmars 'happy at Ajax' amid talk of Arsenal director of football role

Marc Overmars has sought to distance himself from reports suggesting that he is poised to take a director of football role at Arsenal.

Several sources have suggested that the former Gunners forward will return to Emirates Stadium at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

He is, however, currently filling a directorial position at Ajax, having taken that job back in 2012.

Overmars is under contract in Amsterdam until 2020 and has offered no indication that he intends to break that agreement.

“I’m happy at Ajax,” the ex-Netherlands international told NOS.

“There’s nothing happening with other clubs.”

Arsenal have been linked with an approach for Overmars as they seek to bring in a new figurehead to oversee transfer policy.

Dick Law had filled that role for the Gunners, but it was revealed in September that he was to return to his native United States for personal reasons.

The Gunners are eager to fill that void, with several candidates touted.

While Overmars has distanced himself from a switch to north London, Arsene Wenger has also remained coy when quizzed on the possibility of a deal being done.

He told reporters ahead of a 2-1 Premier League defeat to Watford: “At the moment he’s director of Ajax.

“We have been in touch, but not at the moment, no.”

Overmars made a move from Ajax to Arsenal in his playing days back in 1997.

He would spend three seasons with the Gunners, making 124 appearances and netting 40 goals.

Those efforts helped Wenger’s side to a Premier League and FA Cup double in 1997-98, but he left for Barcelona in 2000 as part of double deal with Emmanuel Petit.
