MFM’s Chijioke Akuneto rues another missed chance against Enyimba

MFM attacker, Chijioke Akuneto has stressed that he would have loved to trade his goal for the Olukoya Boys’ three points after they were held to another home draw by Enyimba in a top of the table clash played on Sunday at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.

The Olukoya Boys have boasted that they would end their winless streak against the People’s Elephant in the media ahead of the fixture but they were made to come back from a goal down before securing a share of the spoils against the seven-time league champions.

Abdulrahman Bashir made it two goals against MFM over two legs when he got the game’s curtain raiser for the visitors in the 48th minute before Akuneto restored parity eight minutes later to ensure the 2017 league runners up does not suffer their first home loss of the season.

Speaking with journalists after the encounter Akuneto disclosed that he was not happy that they were unable to inflict a loss on Enyimba and that if he was told to choose between not scoring and his team winning, he would have gladly taken that option for the interest of the Olukoya Boys.

“I am not happy with the result. I think we should have done better than this,” Akuneto told the media.

“I like the fact that I scored but I would have preferred our team to win the match than me scoring. Dropping a point at home is not what we planned for but you know sometimes in football results will not just go your way but I believe we will bounce back.”

MFM have now gone seven games without a win against Enyimba who have beaten them twice and earning five draws but Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men are still at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League with 23 points from 13 games while Usman Abd’Allah’s men are in the second spot with 20 points from 13 matches.

MFM will face Kwara United next at the Kwara Sports Complex, Ilorin while Enyimba will host Bendel Insurance at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba this weekend in the NPFL Matchday 14 games.
