The Reds earned a 2-1 win over their Merseyside derby rivals in the FA Cup on Friday, making it 16 matches without a loss to the Toffees

Liverpool's 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup third round on Friday extended their unbeaten run in the Merseyside derby to a club-record 16 matches.

Newly signed defender Virgil van Dijk immediately began paying back his £75 million transfer fee with a debut winner for Liverpool, netting in the 84th minute at Anfield after Everton's Gylfi Sigurdsson had negated James Milner's opener from the penalty spot.

In addition to keeping the Reds' FA Cup hopes alive, Van Dijk also helped Liverpool remain unbeaten against their local rivals since 2010.

The 16-match stretch is one better than Liverpool's previous best unbeaten run against Everton, which ran from 1972 to 1978.

Since Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta scored in a 2-0 Everton triumph in October 2010, Liverpool have recorded eight wins and eight draws versus the Toffees.

Liverpool also still haven't lost a Merseyside derby in which they've scored first since December 1992.
