What a response by the Matildas

Four goals in 20 minutes from the Matildas has seen them seal an emphatic 5-0 win over Chile on Tuesday.

After falling to a 3-2 defeat on Saturday, the Matildas were hungry for revenge in Newcastle against a Chile side that were equally determined to frustrate.

A tight and increasingly tense first-half ending goalless with Alanna Kennedy going closest to opening the scoring for Australia in the 42nd minute with a header that struck the post.

Whatever Matildas coach Alen Stajcic said at half-time clearly did the trick however with Sam Kerr getting her name once again on the score sheet in the 53rd minute.

The Aussie striker opening the scoring after a crucial interception from Kennedy which allowed Caitlin Foord to set her teammate up for a simple finish inside the box.

Just a minute later the Matildas would have another goal with Foord going from provider to scorer after finding the back of the net from a tight angle following a Chloe Logarzo cross.

Australia would then make it three in the 67th minute with Foord pouncing on a heavy touch from Chile's goalkeeper, Christiane Endler, to finish expertly from the top of the box.

Not done there, the Matildas would make it 4-0 a few minutes later with Emily Gielnik picking out the bottom left of goal after a through ball from Logarzo.

Foord would then wrap up her hat-trick and the 5-0 scoreline in the 89th minute after she was picked out unmarked at the far post.

The Matildas ending 2018 on a deserved high against a Chile side left to lick their wounds.
