Matchday 16 preview: Wafa set for big test as Ghana PL resumes

The Academy boys have the next 15 games to prove that their outstanding showing in the first round has been no fluke

After a two-week break, the Ghana Premier League returns with the first matchday of the second round on Saturday and Sunday.

Leaders Wafa have been reveling in their hold of the top spot following their stunning good run in the first round. Fifteen more matches are set to test their resolve - that they know too well – which makes Sunday’s away tie with Inter Allies as important if they hope to get off to a good start.

Second-placed Aduana Stars sit only two points adrift of the Academy Boys. The Fire Boys hope to beat Bechem United at Dormaa to put themselves in good position to benefit from any slipup on the part of Wafa.

Hearts of Oak are gradually stealing themselves into the title race on the back of their undefeated run in their last six games. Four points behind Aduana, the Phobians have set their sights on victory in their home clash with Liberty Professionals.

Fair to say, Asante Kotoko still wish the first round never happened. In arguably their worst ever run, the most successful team in the Premier League Asante history went - and still are -without a win in their last 10 matches in all competitions, eight of which were topflight games. Now under new coach Steven Polack, the Porcupine Warriors hope to begin a revival in their away encounter with Tema Youth.

Medeama are chasing their sixth triumph of the season in their home tie with newly-promoted Bolga All Stars, who sit bottom of the table with just two wins thus far.

Like Kotoko, reigning champions Wa All Stars have not had a good first round, and will similarly hope to turn things around, obviously starting with their welcome of 2014-15 winners Ashanti Gold.

Having disappointed their fans by their 0-0 home draw with Great Olympics on matchday 15, fourth-placed Berekum Chelsea are hoping to make amends in the return encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium in one of two games on Saturday.

Ebusua Dwarfs host new boys Elmina Sharks in Cape Coast in the other Saturday fixture.
