Jose Mourinho will face Frank Lampard's Derby County when Manchester United host the Championship side in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday, with the ex-Chelsea man facing Mourinho for the first time as a head coach.

Lampard was under the tutelage of Mourinho during their time at Stamford Bridge which yielded a slew of Premier League titles and other accolades, and will have the chance of overcoming his old manager in a huge clash at Old Trafford.

Mourinho is expected to start a strong lineup against Derby to bounce back from the disappointment of the 1-1 draw against Wolves at the weekend, with Diogo Dalot expected to be given the start.

Match Preview

Former Chelsea star Lampard has taken his first steps in the world of management with great strides, starting the Championship season brightly with Derby having clamed 16 points in the opening weeks of the campaign and keeping his side in the upper half of the table.

The Carabao Cup visit to Old Trafford will be his biggest test to date, however, despite facing a United side that has endured a turbulent start to the season and one that has already registered two Premier League losses in the opening six games.

Mourinho's United lost consecutive games to Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur and registered a 1-1 draw to Wolves at the weekend. The Red Devils have managed just 10 points from a possible 18 and currently sti in seventh place – one spot behind Arsenal in the league table.

It will be an interesting match-up between managers, however, considering Lampard and Mourinho's shared past and the former Chelsea midfielder graduating from player to manager.

Despite criticism aimed at Mourinho following Man United's underwhelming start to the season and his ongoing disputes with members of the club's board and certain squad players, Lampard insisted that he remains a formidable manager, telling reporters

“Of course, in management we know we're all sackable at any moment. I am, he is, every manager is. But, at the same time, when he's had the success he's had, people are going to want Jose Mourinho as their manager. So, then it becomes his decision. I imagine he'll want to go on."
