Liverpool great Michael Owen tips Egypt goalkeeper El-Shennawy for Premier League

Liverpool great Michael Owen feels Al Ahly and Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy is ripe to play in the English Premier League.

The goalkeeper was one of Egypt’s standout players at the 2018 Fifa World Cup, notably earning himself the man-of-the-match gong in their opening match against Uruguay following a series of superb saves.

Another terrific display in an Egyptian Premier League 1-0 win over Wadi Degla on Tuesday left Owen concluding that El-Shennawy’s exploits deserve a grander stage.

Owen also hailed Al Ahly’s 23-year-old Moroccan forward Walid Azaro.

“There are very good players like Al Ahly top scorer Walid Azaro. I expected him to score. His height, weight, and energy are good. He worked hard and should have scored,” Owen told Pyramids TV.

“If there is a player who can play in the Premier League from this match, it’s Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy.

“I would like to see him in the Premier League, he has a strong physique and his performance, movement, and size were fantastic.”

Following the recent retirement of Egypt legendary goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary from international football, El-Shennawy is tipped to make the number one position his own.
