There could be a surprise late challenger for the Ballon d’Or after a successful Copa America capped off an extraordinary season for Alisson.
The Brazilian goalkeeper kept five clean sheets as his country romped to continental victory for the first time in 12 years, only conceding in the final thanks to a penalty from Peruvian forward Paolo Guerrero.
Alisson was unsurprisingly awarded the Golden Glove, given to the best stopper in the tournament, which made it three in a matter of months after he scooped the respective individual prizes in the Premier League and Champions League.
888Sport make the Liverpool number one 30/1 (31.0) to become the first goalkeeper since Lev Yashin in 1963 to claim the Ballon d’Or, although that is still some way behind favourites Virgil van Dijk and Lionel Messi.
Given the case Alisson has made in recent months, that price looks perhaps a bit too high. Prior to Guerrero’s penalty in the Copa America final, the 26-year-old had kept nine clean sheets in a row in all competitions.
In fact, dating back to the start of the year, he has kept 19 in 33 matches – including four in seven Champions League matches – conceding just 20 times during that time and making a string of impressive saves.
Of course, the domestic success can be attributed to van Dijk as well as Alisson, with the Dutchman 11/20 (1.55) favourite to lift the award after also claiming the PFA Player of the Year prize in April.
Van Dijk was named Man of the Match in the Champions League final as the Reds beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid, and also captained the Netherlands to the inaugural Nations League final before narrowly losing out 1-0 to hosts Portugal.
Second-favourite Messi is 7/5 (2.40) with 888Sport but that is a price that has drifted out from 3/4 (1.75) in the last few days following a series of inauspicious performances for Argentina as his country lost the final 2-0 to Alisson's Brazil.
Despite another impressive season for Barcelona, scoring 50 goals on the way to La Liga glory and a Champions League semi-final, Messi managed just one goal across the entire Copa America and was sent off in the third-place play-off.
