The PSG defender denied favoritism towards his Brazil international team-mate over Edinson Cavani and insisted his only goal is to win

Dani Alves has denied talk he favours Neymar over Edinson Cavani after the pair clashed over free-kick duties against Lyon.

Paris Saint-Germain came away with a 2-0 win over Lyon in September that was marred by controversy as Neymar and Edinson Cavani bickered over who should take a penalty .

Later in the contest Alves appeared to keep the ball away from Cavani to give to allow Neymar to take a free-kick, sparking talk that the defender was favouring his friend and international team-mate.

However, Alves has now denied that while telling Canal+ that while they acted unprofessionally in their argument, he did not intend to give Neymar the ball for the free-kick. In reality, he meant to take it himself.

"It looked like we were at the playground, bickering about who was going to take the free-kick,” Alves said.

"I did not go to give him the ball, if you look at the pictures you will see that at the beginning, I took the ball to shoot the free kick.

“Cavani arrived to take the ball, and by the time I was hiding the ball in my back, Neymar came from behind and stole it from me.”

Alves further clarified he is neither player’s babysitter, and spoke of his desire to do what it takes to win.

“I'm not Ney’s nanny, nor Edi's nanny, I just took the ball because I wanted to shoot, I'm ready to take the lead with anyone if it allows me to win.”

Alves missed out on PSG’s Sunday clash with Olympique Marseille due to injury, which ironically ended with Neymar being sent-off before Cavani curled in a stoppage-time free-kick to rescue a 2-2 draw.
