Atletico entered the second leg of the Champions League last-16 encounter holding a 2-0 advantage, putting the onus on Juventus to attack.
The home side did just that, and they thought they'd taken an early lead just three minutes in when Giorgio Chiellini slammed home off a corner kick after a scramble in front of the net.
However, Dutch referee Bjoern Kuipers judged that Cristiano Ronaldo had fouled Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the build-up, and waved off the goal.
After a brief VAR review with Kuipers staying on the field, the decision was upheld and Atletico could breathe a sigh of relief.
Naturally, there was plenty of reaction on social media to the incident, with fans divided as to whether Ronaldo had committed an infraction.
It's a foul. Even my pet hamster knows any contact on the keeper is an infraction and he doesn't even exist.— Daniel Edwards 💚 (@DanEdwardsGoal) March 12, 2019

That’s not a foul at all.— Jordan Clarke (@FourFourJordan) March 12, 2019
Not a foul both Ronaldo and Oblak have a right to go for the ball— FreeOzil (@BasedChasen) March 12, 2019
A poor decision from the referee. Oblak did not clearly have control over the ball so Ronaldo's challenge is fair. That should have been a goal.— utdarena (@utdarena) March 12, 2019
Watched this from 5 different angles and I have no idea if it's a foul or not, or who you'd call it on. I'm not a ref but... play on?— Kimberly McCauley (@lgbtqfc) March 12, 2019
Oblak and Ronaldo both made honest attempts at a loose ball, both got some of the ball before the man and crashed into each other. https://t.co/7c95BUYMVu
Looked a foul on Oblak to me, even tho Ronaldo was playing the ball. Juve starting fast, tho.— Michael (@CholoColcho) March 12, 2019
that's definitely a foul on Oblak btw.— Muhammad Butt (@muhammadbutt) March 12, 2019
Unbelievable start to the Juventus Atletico game... VAR in action already... goal ruled out but I think it should stand....— Chris Sutton (@chris_sutton73) March 12, 2019
HOW IS THAT A FOUL ON THE GK, VAR IS HONESTLY SO POINTLESS. THEY LITERALLY PICK AND CHOOSE WHEN THEY WANT A GOAL.— Filipe Orlando 🌏 (@MrFilipeOrlando) March 12, 2019
