Ghana FA executive committee member Eddie Doku has jumped to the defence of assistant coach Maxwell Konadu after the local Black Stars crashed out of the 2018 African Nations Championship qualifiers.

Ghana lost 2-1 at home to Burkina Faso in the second leg of the qualifying after sealing a 2-2 away stalemate, with many Ghanaians now calling for the axing of Konadu, who was unable to lead the team to the previous edition as well.

“Why should he be sacked when he was only working under coach Kwesi Appiah? I don’t think anybody should be sacked,” Doku told Graphic Sports.

“The Burkina Faso team has been together for long and our team is just a young team that was put together recently and is playing competitive matches for the first time.

“We are now building a team and I can tell you that, apart from Awal Mohammed and Joseph Addo, most of our players wore the Black Stars jersey for the second time. Why should we sack Maxwell Konadu when he was not the man in charge,” he added.

Konadu, who doubles as the assistant coach of the 'main' Black Stars, will team up with Kwesi Appiah ahead of the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Congo next month.
