English Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed that new signing Percy Tau has joined Belgium second division club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on a season-long loan

The 24-year-old joined the Seagulls during the 2018 July/August transfer window following an impressive campaign with Mamelodi Sundowns where he was crowned the 2017/18 Premier Soccer League (PSL) Football of the Year.

However, following the announcement of his highly anticipated move, it was revealed that Tau would be sent out on loan in order to gain European experience.

The club are believed to see Tau as one for the future, but the difficulty of attaining a work permit could also have influenced matters.

Nonetheless, Tau’s move comes as no surprise to many as he will now have to adapt to the rigours of the Belgium second tier for the duration of the current campaign.

“Percy is a talent we have brought to the club for the future, and this loan allows him to play regular senior football here in Europe,” Brighton’s Development pathway manager David Weir told the English club’s website.

“It is a significant investment for us, and we will be closely watching his progress with Union and monitoring his development over the season,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tau’s move to Belgium may also have been brought on by the fact that Brighton chairman Tony Bloom is reported to also be the majority shareholder in the Belgium First Division B Club.

Prior to leaving SA, Tau was the PSL’s joint top scorer with 11 goals to his name in a championship winning season with the Tshwane giants and he will hope to carry that same form into his new life as he looks to help the Belgium club gain promotion.
