The Students moved four points ahead of the Brazilians with one game left to play.
Here's what our Goal staff had to say about the direction of the PSL title:
Goal South Africa editor Ignat Manjoo
"South Africa's PSL always needs a strong Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, while Mamelodi Sundowns are ruling Africa. On the other hand it's always exciting for new clubs to make their mark. It's been a while since Bucs competed for the title and the Amakhosi are going through a transition phase. With Sundowns busy on Caf duty all season, this was the perfect time for the likes of Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United to flex their muscles. Who would have thought that newly formed club, Cape Town City would stretch them all the way too? One of the winners in the title race is the South African public who enjoyed what must have been one of the most interesting chases in memory! Not long ago there were five clubs in the running.
"I'm mostly delighted for coach Gavin Hunt. He'd already proved his credentials with the title at SuperSport United and has now done it at another club outside the big three. Hunt's achievement reminds me of Gordon Igesund who surprised everyone with league titles at Manning Rangers and Santos. Another common denominator is that Hunt was ignored for coaching Bafana Bafana, and I hope that in future Safa doesn't decide to give the Wits mentor a chance only when it's too late. Igesund came in long after his peak period as a coach and during Bafana's lowest point. This time Safa's chosen Stuart Baxter, a coach that Hunt has now beaten in the PSL. Being close with the fans, we know that many fans are reminding Safa about this point.
"Nevertheless, Baxter's done a good job at SuperSport and won two titles at Chiefs. He can be just as successful as Hunt and the South African public needs to get behind him. In the meantime, I'd like to see Hunt gain some experience in Caf with Bidvest Wits. The African Champions League has already improved Pitso Mosimane's coaching experience and this is the missing ingredient in Hunt's CV. It was already disappointing how the Students were knocked out of the Caf Confederation Cup when SuperSport and Platinum Stars progressed. Caf should be Wits target in the following season."

"Wits winning the PSL title comes as a breath of fresh air. After falling by the wayside in the last few seasons, this season Wits showed true grit and most importantly consistency. Gavin Hunt should be applauded for what he has achieved. Although, he has garnered criticism for his playing style, it has undoubtedly been effective."
Assistant editor and journalist Ernest Makhaya
"This is a remarkable success story. Gavin Hunt deserves credit for transforming Wits into one of the best teams in the league. He signed the players that other teams rejected and blooded this team with young players who brought in energy and were determined to make a name for themselves. For example, Orlando Pirates allowed Daine Klate to leave, Sundowns did the same with Cuthbert Malajila, Mogakolodi Ngele and Elias Pelembe. Kaizer Chiefs deemed James Keene and Siboniso Gaxa not good enough, but Hunt saw something in these players and gave them a chance because as they say, 'You cannot buy experience'. This is what won the Students the title, and for this reason, Hunt should be applauded, and the management should be lauded for their patience in the 52-year-old."
