Cape Town City midfielder Thato Mokeke is confident that they will defeat Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash on Sunday.

“We are confident we can beat Chiefs. We played them in the league (and won 1-0). We didn’t do well in our last league match against Polokwane City. We failed to score and we want to improve on that,” Mokeke told Independent Media.

Despite the fact that City are tipped to challenge for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title, Mokeke says the title race is out of their reach.

City occupies the fourth spot on the log table with 40 points and trail log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns with three points.

“The league is currently not in our own hands but the Nedbank Cup is. It gives us an opportunity to win a second trophy and a chance to compete against the best in Africa,” added the midfielder.

City have reached three cup finals since their formation less than three years ago and they already have two trophies in their cabinet.

“The club has really grown. I think it has to do with the level of professionalism. The club lost some of the great players in the past but they replaced them with other good quality players,” he added.

In addition, the Cape Town-born player says the Naturena-based club is under pressure having failed to lift a trophy in close to four seasons.

“They also see this opportunity as the only chance of winning something this season. That will put them under pressure, so we have to be composed when we face them,” said the midfielder.

“This is a big cup. We also want to test ourselves against the best in Africa like any other teams in the league,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the encounter will be staged at the Mbombela Stadium.
