Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt is delighted to have finally got his hands on the Telkom Knockout Cup trophy after failing on a number of ocassions both as a player and coach.
The Students were crowned champions after substitute Vincent Pule scored the winner at the death following some brilliant display from Egyptian striker Amr Gamal.
“It’s fantastic. I played in the final as a player and I lost. If we had four victories in the league, we would be top of the log. Maybe give the cup [away], but we will enjoy the moment,” Hunt said post-match.
Given the nature of South African football, one goal always wins the game and it’s what Hunt preyed on during the game.
“I thought let’s try win the game, the space was there. In South African football, one goal wins games - it’s one of those things. I’m happy for the club and the boys,” Hunt said.
Defensively, the more fancied Students had all of their regulars back, and they brought the much needed stability that they've been lacking since the start of the season.
“This is the first time we had all our first team defenders. I thought they were magnificent besides one slip up at the end there. In South Africa, you need a good defence because you can get one or two results. We haven’t done it this season but we got a result tonight, it was going to take one moment,” Hunt said.
