Bertrand Traore and Falcao light up the weekend - The Ligue 1 Performance Index

Lyon have made waves this week, following up their astonishing 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League with a comprehensive 4-2 success over rivals Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Bertrand Traore admitted that he was upset to miss out on the starting XI against City and made sure that head coach Bruno Genesio knew all about it on Sunday. And he did so in the most positive manner possible by turning in the Ligue 1 performance of the weekend, according to the Opta Index.

Even without the statistics, though, it was clear that the former Ajax man had produced a special performance at Parc OL. He played his hand in Houssem Aouar’s nicely constructed opening goal but really came to the fore in the second half, when Lyon exploited the gaps in the Marseille defence to score three more times.

Traore’s finishing was clinical as he netted twice. He also won a penalty and drew a red card from Duje Caleta-Car, earning him a mammoth weekend score of 96.1.

He was the standout player on the field, although Clinton Njie gave a strong contribution for the visitors off the bench, netting late on to briefly rekindle some hope. The ex-Tottenham man finished seven in the rankings this week.

Second in the ranking, though, was Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, who was one of the players to come through a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Nimes with some credit. Indeed, without Falcao, things might have been a good deal worse for the principality side, who fell behind early on but managed to salvage a share of the points thanks to a shot from the Colombia shortly after that opener.

Falcao’s team-mate Youssef Ait Bennasser was a formidable presence in the centre of the field during that match, winning his side a great deal of possession and using it wisely. He rounds out the top 10 with a score of 85.5.

Completing the podium, though, is Bordeaux attacker Yann Karamoh. Ricardo Gomes’ side have been toiling of late, but the on-loan Inter winger gave them a vital victory away to bottom side Guingamp by stepping off the bench to score. Additionally, Nicolas De Preville did likewise, snatching a fourth for the Aquitaine club deep in stoppage time – enough to push him up to fourth in the Performance Index this week.

Indeed, a hat-trick of Bordeaux players have made it into the top 10, with starter Francois Kamano coming in eighth. His opening goal in that 3-1 victory was perhaps the most eye-catching, as he fired into the top corner from the edge of the box, while he would later lay on an assist for Karamoh, too.

Ranked fifth for their performance this week is Strasbourg wing-back Kenny Lala, who was a persistent threat going forward for Racing in their crucial 3-1 victory over Amiens. He contributed what was perhaps the most important moment of the game, firing a free kick into the top corner of the net to change the flow of the game early in the second half, proving the required momentum for the hosts to go on and win the game 3-1.

Faycal Fajr’s showing in Caen’s match against Saint-Etienne proved less important in the end, as his side were defeated 2-1. He did open the scoring, albeit via a goalkeeping error, but his overall performance was metronomic for the Normandy side.

Completing the top 10 this week is Nantes substitute Kalifa Coulibaly, who came off the bench to bring life to his side’s game against Lille, though the late goal proved little more than a consolation in a 2-1 loss.

A busy week of action lies ahead, with each team playing twice this week, culminating in blockbuster fixtures such as Monaco’s trip to Saint-Etienne, PSG’s visit to Nice and second-placed Lille hosting Marseille on Sunday.
