The Belgium international continues to be heavily linked with a summer switch, but his Spanish team-mate wants him to remain at Stamford Bridge

Marcos Alonso considers Thibaut Courtois to be a “great goalkeeper” and hopes to see Chelsea fend off admiring glances from Real Madrid.

The Liga giants continue to be heavily linked with a summer approach for the Belgium international.

'Only greatest run can deny Chelsea'

Zinedine Zidane is said to be in the market for a new shot-stopper, with his gaze locked on the best that the Premier League has to offer.

Manchester United’s David de Gea has been a long-term target for Real, while Courtois has also figured prominently on their radar since impressing in the Spanish capital during a productive three-season loan stint at Atletico Madrid.

Alonso, though, feels that Chelsea should be looking to retain the services of prized assets that have played a leading role in their 2016-17 title challenge.

He told Onda Cero: "I really hope [Courtois does not move to Real Madrid] because he is great goalkeeper and he is helping us every game.”

Alonso started his career at Santiago Bernabeu, as a product of Real’s academy system, and has also been linked with a return to his roots at some stage.

Pedro: Chelsea retain the advantage

He is, however, fully focused on events at Stamford Bridge for now.

The 26-year-old wing-back added: "Since I left there I have had no contact with the club and now I am very focused on Chelsea. We have a very important season ahead."

Antonio Conte’s side hold an eight-point advantage at the top of the Premier League table, but they were held by Burnley in their most recent outing to allow the chasing pack to close the gap.

Alonso said of the Blues’ pursuit of major domestic silverware: "The team are playing very well. We have adapted very well to the idea of the coach and we hope to continue this way until the end of the season.

“We are training a lot and very well. The team has understood perfectly what the coach wants and we are proving that every weekend.

"It is clear that not playing Europe is an advantage over other teams but we are training very well, and I think that's the most important thing. That's what is allowing us to stay free of injuries and play with almost the same eleven every weekend.

"It is not easy to bring the methods of a new manager to the Premier League. We are seeing that with Pep Guardiola and other new coaches. In the Premier League it is not easy to innovate [like Conte is doing with his 3-4-3 system]. But we are doing things well.”
