Algeria star Islam Slimani ruled out of Benin clash with injury

The Fenerbahce attacker suffered an injury after his last outing in the Turkish Super Lig and will now miss the Desert Foxes' 2019 Afcon qualifiers

Islam Slimani has been ruled out of Algeria's 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Benin on Friday and Tuesday as he continues recovery from a thigh injury.

The 30-year-old forward arrived at the national team base with pain in his thigh region after playing for the entire 90 minutes in Fenerbahce's goalless draw against Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday.

After medical examinations, the Algerian Football Federation confirmed that Slimani will miss the encounter against the Squirrels at the Mustapha-Tchaker Stadium on Friday and also the return fixture in Cotonou four days later.

"[Slimani] arrived injured in the selection after a league match played with his club in Turkey, Islam Slimani will finally not be retained for the double confrontation of the national team against Benin on October 12 and 16," read a statement on the federation's website.

"This is the decision made by the doctor of the national team, Dr. Benazieb Mohamed-Larbi after consultation with the coach, Mr. Djamel Belmadi."

Meanwhile, the Desert Foxes boss Belmadi has turned to Vitesse striker Oussama Darfalou for his maiden invitation to the national team as a replacement for the crooked forward.

Algeria and Benin are joint leaders in Group D with four points from two games while Gambia and Togo occupy the third and fourth spots respectively with a point apiece.
