Ajax Cape Town confirm signing of former Kaizer Chiefs defender Sibusiso Khumalo

The full-back has been a free agent ever since he was released by Amakhosi at the end of the previous campaign

Ajax Cape Town have confirmed the signing of Sibusiso Khumalo as a free agent.

Khumalo was most recently on the books of Kaizer Chiefs but was deemed surplus to requirements and subsequently released at the end of the previous campaign.

The 28-year-old, who previously turned out for the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United found first team football hard to come by and made just a solitary appearance for Chiefs in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) before departing.

Nonetheless, following Khumalo’s departure there was certainly no shortage of interest in his services. The likes of AmaZulu and Chippa United were all reported to be keen on the player, but a move did not materialise.

However, with the National First Division (NFD) set to begin, the Urban Warriors have brought the full-back on board as they hope to make a quick return to the top flight.

While Ajax finished 15th on the table, due to a long -drawn out eligibility saga involving former player Tendai Ndoro, they were deducted points and were relegated.

Although, Ajax fought tooth and nail in order to overturn the decision, it was not to be as they eventually conceded defeat and it seems Muhsin Ertugral is now setting his sights on the new season by bringing in some much-needed experience.

The signing of Khumalo may have been influenced by the departure of another defender, Mosa Lebusa, who has since joined Mamelodi Sundowns.

Nevertheless, the Mother City-based outfit took to Twitter to announce their latest signing.

It now remains to be seen whether or not Khumalo will make his debut on the weekend. Ajax begin their NFD campaign with a tricky clash against Jomo Cosmos on Sunday.
