Russell Slade has praised Yakubu Aiyegbeni after his first week at Coventry City.

In his heyday, the former Everton striker was a nightmare for defenders in the English topflight having registered almost a century of goals, and the Sky Blues’ manager said he ‘made a big impression’ during his trial.

“He’s made a big impression, he’s a nice fella and he’s been welcomed by the team,” Slade told Sky Sports.

“He’s been away in Turkey [Kayserispor], that was his last football club. He’s back over in England now and wants to get back playing as quickly as he can.”

The League One side are currently battling relegation and are hoping to secure the 34-year-oldl on a short-term deal. An arrangement Slade believes could help kickstart his side’s resurgence.

“I don’t think we’re a million miles away but sometimes just to find those extra few inches to bridge that gap,” he said

“You know one player can do that, to find that spark for you to get you some momentum going forward and that’s what we’re looking for. That’s what we desperately need.”
