Akwa United have snapped up two players to beef up the team ahead of the second half of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.
These include former Flying Eagles’ star Samuel Okon and Saviour Abanga of Akwa Starlets.
Okon joined the Promise Keepers from Greater Tomorrow FC, Uyo, deciding to sign for his home team till the end of the season after his dream of playing abroad has not come into fruition.
The impressive midfielder was in the Manu Garba-inspired Golden Eaglets squad that dazzled the world during the 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Akwa United media officer Uwem Ekoh told Goal that the two players did not travel with the team to Oghara where they played Bayelsa United to a 1-1 draw in a Week 20 tie because the paperwork for their transfers were not completed on time.
He expressed optimism that the addition of the two players will add some steel and life to Akwa United where the team is still competing for two titles in both the Federation Cup and the league.
"We hope to start fielding them in our next game after their paperwork wasn't complete on time for them to feature in the match with Bayelsa United," Ekoh told Goal.
Akwa United, under coach Zachary Baraje, are 14th on the log with 25 points from 19 matches.
