Rangers beat Sharks to grab Champions League place over Lobi Stars

There was lots of mild drama on the last day of the league as Niger Tornadoes and Jigawa Golden Stars joined Rising Stars and Ocean Boys to go down the relegation ladder

Enugu Rangers have nicked a deserved Caf Champions League ticket after a 3-0 victory over Sharks of Port Harcourt at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium, Enugu.

Goals from Ifeanyi Ede in the third minute, Oghogho Oduokpe in the fifth and Chinedu Sunday in the 87th minute gave the Flying Antelopes the maximum points and a second position on the log after Lobi Stars capitulated 1-3 in Kaduna against Kaduna United.

The match in Enugu was full of bad temper as three players were shown the red card for violent conduct. Two Sharks goal keepers-Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Gambo Gideon were shown instant red cards while Rangers' midfielder Emeka Eze was also ordered off the pitch for another foul charge.

It was obvious the fans were not happy at the decision of the NPL to dock the club six points got from Ocean Boys and for the second time in two days protested shortly after the match demanding that the club should be handed the trophy and not Kano Pillars.

Enyimba of Aba also ensured that they ended the season on a good note when they thrashed Wikki Tourists 3-0. Chinonso Okonkwo, Markson Ojobo and Gabriel Agu were the goal scorers.

At the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, there were no relegation worries for Heartland after a close 1-0 win over stubborn Akwa United.

Kabiru Umar's 48th minute goal was enough for the three points as the Naze Millionaires rounded off the season on 51 points.

Lobi Stars had to settle for a Caf Confederation Cup spot after losing 1-3 against Kaduna in a tie they needed a win to be guaranteed second position.

Despite beating Jigawa Golden Stars 2-0 Niger Tornadoes were relegated from the NPL alongside Jigawa Stars, Rising Stars and already confirmed Ocean Boys.

Pillars won the league in spite of losing 1-2 at Sunshine Stars in Ijebu Ode while Rangers got the second ticket in the Africa's lucrative club competition and Lobi settled for a place in the second tier Confederation Cup alongside Heartland of Owerri.
