Paraguay thrashed New Zealand 3-1 in their final match of Group A to qualify for the round of 16 as group toppers. Giovanni Bogado, Fernando Cardozo and Antonio Galeano were on target to help Paraguay maintain their winning streak in the tournament. Kerem Kesgin scored the only goal for Turkey.
Favourites Paraguay got a chance to go ahead as early as in the first minute when Blas Armoa was brought down inside the box. Unfortunately, Anibal Vega’s shot was blocked by Turkish custodian Ozer.
Turkey were never in control of the game right from the kickoff as the Latin American side kept on pressing in front of the goal. Paraguay got their reward finally in the 40th minute from a stunning free-kick of Giovanni Bogado from the edge of the box.
They soon doubled their lead within two minutes as Fernando Cardozo clipped in a pass from Blas Armoa. The left winger ran down the flank and kept a perfect ball for Cardozo who calmly found the back of the net.
Paraguay started the second half with equal zeal and hunger and kept on troubling the Turkish backline. Turkey too got some opportunities to pull one back but their attacks were not convincing enough.
Paraguay hammered the last nail in Turkey’s coffin at the hour mark. Antonio Galeano took a shot at goal which got deflected of Turkish defender Gokcimen’s chest and went inside.
It was all but over for the men in red who were staring at yet another embarrassing defeat and bow out of the tournament with just 1 point. Turkey finally scored a consolation goal just a minute before full time. Kerem Kesgin’s right-footer from the edge of the box went straight into the goal.
