Pistone Mutamba announced his arrival at Sofapaka with a goal in a 3-0 vctory against Thika United at the Narok Stadium.
Mutamba joined the former champions in the June transfer from Wazito and his opening goal, a penalty from substitute Kevin Kimani and late thunderbolt from Eli Asieche shot Sofapaka to second on the log following a convincing win.
Mutamba just needed 66 minutes on the pitch to score his seventh goal of the season and a first for the victors. Sofapaka exerted their weight behind the ball early in the exchanges with Mutamba, Kepha Aswani and Waruru linking up well up front.
Stephen Waruru's shot in the opening minute gave Eliud Emase tough time to contain, but the custodian did well to save the resultant rebound. Asieche stole the ball from sluggish Thika United defenders, but Emase once again denied the host from opening the lead.
Eugene Mukangula was presented with an open chance to give Thika United the lead, but the linesman waved him down for an offside.
Waruru was once again denied by Emase from a set piece after the diminutive striker floated his free-kick just above the wall, but a hard-working custodian parried it out for a corner kick.
Emase frustrated Sofapaka in the first and it was the visitors, who also almost to the lead with two minutes to the break but James Kinyua was waved down.
Thika United came back in the second half a more organized side when visitors’ forced Wycliffe Kasaya to a full stretch with a long-range shot from outside the 25-meter yard.
Captain Dennis Odhiambo conceded a penalty and Kevin Kimani did not waste a chance, converting from the spot to double Sofapaka’s advantage just three minutes later.
Asieche made it 3-0 in the 75th minute after Thika United failed to deal with Kimani’s free-kick. Sofapaka have now dislodged Mathare United from second place with 34 points, one above the 'Slum Boys', who are tied on points with Bandari.
