Commentary

That's all for today, goodbye!
Back-to-back comeback victories see Real join Osasuna, Athletic Club, and Barcelona in the final four of the Copa del Rey. They face Real Sociedad in their next league game while Atletico will look to bounce back against Osasuna in their next fixture.
Atletico did not let the occasion or the home fans get to them in the first half after they produced a very professional display. Neither side came flying out of the blocks but it was clear that the visitors were willing to take more risks in the final third, and it paid off for them. Morata finished off a well-worked move to give Atletico the lead in the 19th minute. Real were tame to say the least in the first period. They were slow in their passing and lacked the assured decision-making that helped their opponents lead at the break. Real completely dominated the second half, having 70 per cent of possession and taking 14 shots. Despite this, they didn't look like scoring for the most part before a moment of brilliance from Rodrygo. The substitute dribbled past four players before scoring past Oblak to equalise. Griezmann had a great chance to score late on but failed to test Courtois from 12 yards out. Atletico had the worst first half possible in extra time. Savic received two quickfire yellow cards to be sent off before Benzema gave Real the lead with a good finish after Vinicius scuffed the initial shot. They were control for the whole half and this continued for the final 15 minutes. Vinicius scored in the 121st minute to secure a 3-1 win for Los Blancos and a place in the semi-finals.

Diego Simone’s Atletico often bring the fire to this fixture to try and lower the quality of the match and rattle their opponents. In that most recent defeat to their rivals, Mario Hermoso came on as a substitute and scored before receiving two yellow cards in as many minutes to be sent off. Atletico are also in good form after beating Real Valladolid 3-0 in their last match, their joint-biggest win in the league since early September. They have only conceded one goal in four Copa del Rey matches this season.
Real Madrid were at their clinical best when the two sides last met back in September and they won 2-1. After a recent dip in form, Carlo Ancelotti’s side seem to be back on their feet after an inspiring win in the last round of this competition. Trailing 2-0 at half-time to Villarreal, Los Blancos made a stunning comeback to win 3-2 away from home. They also kept their first clean sheet in five games in their last fixture against Athletic Club.
