Mumbai City FC thrashed Delhi Dynamos 4-0 in Indian Super League (ISL) in Mumbai on Friday. Lucian Goian, Everton Santos and Balwant Singh were on target to help the home side secure a thumping win over the struggling visitors.
In their final home match of 2017, Mumbai City FC lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with two changes from the side that got the better of NorthEast United FC as Sehnaj Singh returned to the team after his suspension while an injured Amrinder Singh was replaced by Arindam Bhattacharya between the sticks.
As for visitors Delhi Dynamos, defenders Munmun Lugun and Rowilson Rodrigues were dropped from the first XI to bring in Vinit Rai and Nandhakumar Sekar in the attack as they opted for a 4-2-3-1 shape.
The hosts had a bright start to the match as they grabbed the lead in the 12th minute from skipper Lucian Goian’s strike. The drama unfurled when Delhi Dynamos goalkeeper Arnab Das Sharma brought down Everton Santos inside the box while the Brazilian made the run to connect with Balwant Singh’s long-ball.
Following the foul, a penalty-kick was awarded to The Islanders which saw Achille Emana’s shot fool the custodian but miss the target. However, an alert Lucian Goian scored from the rebound to clinch his first goal of the season.
In the 23rd minute, Miguel Angel Portugal’s side had the chance to reduce the deficit but winger Romeo Fernandes sent his shot wide. Around the half-hour mark, the Delhi-based side came close to registering an equaliser once again as Mirabaje’s shot hit the woodwork after left-back Ruidas failed to clear the ball.
Just three minutes before the half-time whistle, the hosts doubled their lead from Emana’s free-kick as Everton jumped the highest to send a well-timed header into the back of the net.
The first-half ended on a controversial note as Sehnaj and Mirabaje were given marching orders for their scuffle on the field. It was the home side which walked off with a 2-0 lead at the half-time whistle.
The second half saw The Islanders register their third goal of the night when Thiago Santos got his name on the score-sheet. In the 49th minute, Ruidas stood up for a corner-kick which was headed by Everton. The ball ricocheted off the post but was eventually tapped in by the 22-year-old Thiago.
Mumbai City preyed on Delhi Dynamos’ shaky defence as stalwart Balwant scored his fifth goal of the season in the 79th minute. Emana picked out the 30-year-old striker in the centre of the box who sent the ball past a sloppy Das Sharma.
Goian and co. succeeded in maintaining a tight defence which gifted the hosts a clean-sheet along with the three points on Friday evening at the Mumbai Football Arena. The 4-0 victory is Alexandre Guimaraes’ biggest win of the season so far.
