The referee brings proceedings to a close in Liverpool, with the home side taking a comfortable 2-0 win into the second leg next week. Manchester United were all over the place for much of the match and never looked like even registering a goal, with creativity at a minimal. Klopp's men are well worth the victory, with the excellent Firmino adding to Sturridge's penalty. There's still plenty to play for, but the Reds will now be strong favourites following a dismal United display.
There will be two minutes added on here.
Carrick finds himself almost embarrassed again there, as Origi races on to a pass in behind the United man and his pace is blistering. The experience midfielder is forced to concede a corner.
Fellaini is a lucky chap there. The Belgian tracks back and halts Henderson's cross with a high boot, catching the Englishman in the process. he escapes a second booking though.
D. Origi
Roberto Firmino
Another switch for Liverpool now, as goal-scorer Firmino is replaced by Origi. The Brazilian had a wonderful game.
Although Liverpool continue to venture forward, United are starting to find quite a bit of space in the hosts' half. Perhaps there will the opportunity to pull one back?
Ander Herrera
And United's other switch sees Mata replaced by compatriot Herrera. The former was really ineffective today.
B. Schweinsteiger
M. Schneiderlin
Two change for United now, as Schweinsteiger makes his return to first-team action, taking the place of Schneiderlin.
It continues to be Liverpool doing all of the attacking here. United may be the ones two down, but the home side are the ones searching out more goals and few would bet against them adding to the score, particularly with Firmino and Lallana still on.
United have a moutain to climb now. They have offered more in the second half, but still not enough. There has been very little creativity and they've been second best throughout.
A. Lallana
Lallana begins the move by playing Henderson up the wing and then he creates the goal, chasing down the loose ball and teeing up Firmino. Great play.
Roberto Firmino
GOAL!!!! LIVERPOOL HAVE A SECOND! Henderson is released up the right and he squeezes a cross into the danger zone. Carrick should clear it but his feeble attempt is pounced upon Lallana, who started the move, and he shows great composure to tee up Firmino for an easy finish.
Coutinho slips as he takes his free-kick, and United clear. Liverpool remain on the front foot, though, and a brilliant turn by Lallana allows Firmino to be released into the right side of the area, but Rojo does well to block his low cross.
Free-kick now to Liverpool, as Varela is penalised for a high boot. This is a great position, just outside the area.
LET-OFF FOR UNITED! Martial is caught in possession deep in the visitors' half and Lallana is swiftly released into the left side of the area. He plays it back to the edge of the area for the arriving Henderson, but he can't quite direct his effort on target.
STINGING DRIVE! United afford Clyne so much space in the attacking third and he opts to try his luck from 30 yards. The right-back's effort is ferocious and forces De Gea into action, but it was straight at him and he pushes it away.
Good turn by Fellaini, as the Belgian receives a pass into feet and spins away from Henderson as he controls it. The Liverpool captain falls for it and knocks his opponent over.
J. Allen
D. Sturridge
Here comes the first change of the day, as Joe Allen comes on for Sturridge. Jurgen Klopp is clearly trying to protect the striker, who has only recently come back from injury.
Nearly a fine move by United! Depay darts in from the left and picks out a clever pass into the area for Martial, who had lost his man, but the Frenchman loses his balance and his first touch allows Sakho to steal it back.
M. Fellaini
Yellow Card
Clyne is faced up by both Fellaini and Rojo and eventually lures the Belgian into a tackle, and he completely misses the ball. Out come the yellow card.
Good breakaway from the home side and they switch it out to Lallana on the right who finds space. His cross is decent, but is headed clear and out for a throw-in.
The Liverpool corner comes to nothing and United are quickly back on the attack, as Varela does well to get away from two men in the midfield. The visitors work it up the left, before then shifting back to the opposite flank. Eventually the right-back crosses towards Martial, but Mignolet punches away in commanding fashion.
LIVERPOOL DENIED! Firmino does well to knock the ball on to Coutinho and it sits up kindly for the former Inter man and he hits in on the half-volley, forcing De Gea into a theatrical stop to tip it over.
Lovely football from the home side, as they come under pressure in possession in the left-back area, but they play their way out of danger with some one-touch football, before Firmino's lofted pass over the United defence is just a little too heavy for Sturridge.
United already seem to be seeing a little more of the ball in the Liverpool half at the start of this half, with their shape looking much better than before the break.
That's a bit better from United, as Carrick brings the ball out from the back and plays it out wide. Eventually they work it up the left, where Blind and Schneiderlin combine and the Frenchman sees his 25-yard effort easily gobbled up by Mignolet.
Philippe Coutinho
Yellow Card
Coutinho takes the corner short and finds Clyne, who swiftly plays the ball back to the Brazilian. He darts past Depay but then goes to ground and is deservedly booked for diving.
A strong challenge from the already-booked Rojo sees Liverpool win a free-kick about 35 yards from goal. The resulting delivery is deflected behind for a corner.
M. Carrick
M. Rashford
Off we go for the second half and there was a change for United at the break, with Rashford making way for Carrick. It looks like a shake-up has occurred, with the England midfielder moving to centre-back.
The referee brings the first half to a close, with Liverpool deservedly 1-0 up at the break. Sturridge's penalty is all that separates the two sides on the scoreboard, but in truth this has been extremely one-sided and United are only still in this because of De Gea. The Spain international has made several world-class saves so far to deny the hosts. Van Gaal's men can only improve after the break.
M. Rashford
Yellow Card
Rashford is the latest player to get booked, as he catches Moreno with a late trip.
D. Lovren
Yellow Card
Finally a United breakaway, as Depay and Martial link up well on the left. The Dutchman is clattered into by Lovren, but the referee allows play to go on, with the France striker on the case. Eventually the visitors work the ball around the Liverpool half and it ends with a long-range effort going wide. The match official then books the hosts' Croatian defender who his late tackle.
WHAT A SAVE! Firmino has been a real creative hub for Liverpool so far and he is at it again. This time he produces a drilled cross and Lallana directs it towards goal, and De Gea parries it away with a fine reaction stop.
Lallana is giving Rojo plenty to think about at the moment. He twists and turns, before finding enough space to cross, but Rashford does enough to stop Coutinho from getting a touch.
Liverpool play the corner short and then the ball is hoisted into the area, but Fellaini heads it clear. The home side remain on the front foot, though.
Good play once again from Sturridge, as he cuts in from the right and clips the ball into the area, but it is deflected behind for a corner. United can hardly get out of their own area at the moment.
That a waste. Depay steps up and attempts to send a stinging drive towards goal, but it flies well wide and only succeeds in drawing ironic cheers from the crowd.
Good hold-up play by Fellaini, as he brings down a long ball from the back, shields it and then wins a free-kick from Lovren, about 30 yards from goal. This is probably their best chance at causing Liverpool a problem so far.
A rare United attack now, as they try their luck up the left flank, but it comes to nothing, as Depay's attempted pass into the area is easily cut out by a crowd of players.
DE GEA! Another brilliant pass from Firmino, as the Brazilian clips a lofted ball into the area. It should be simple for Smalling, who attempts a diving header. But the England defender slips and completely misses. Sturridge is there and he blasts it towards goal, but the United goalkeeper bails out his centre-back.
A missed clearance in his own area from Sakho appears to gift United a glorious chance. Mata pounces and produces a brilliant turn to get away from the Frenchman, who makes a rash challenge. The Spaniard is honest, though, and doesn't go down and the move comes to an end. That's a let-off for the hosts.
No wonder United aren't creating anything. Rashford appears to be operating as a second right-back at the moment, while both Depay and Martial occupy positions out wide. Not very inspiring if you're an away fan!
United aren't posing any kind of attacking threat at the moment. Schneiderlin does well to steal the ball back in midfield, before nudging it on to Mata, but his hopeful pass forward towards Martial is cut out with ease.
UNITED ESCAPE! Sturridge is causing havoc out there at the moment. He twists and turns, dazzling Rojo with his quick feet before playing the ball across goal. Coutinho looks destined for a simple tap-in, but he takes it with the wrong foot and De Gea is able to claw it away from the goal-line. What a miss!
The Liverpool corner doesn't come to anything initially, but United don't clear it particularly effectively. Back come the hosts and Sturridge finds himself dribbling past a few players, though he is finally halted by Fellaini.
More pressure for United to contend with now. This time Sturridge peels away to the left flank and is given a lot of time. He crosses into the danger zone and Rojo is forced to head it behind for a corner.
D. Sturridge
Penalty Goal
GOAL!!!! FIRST BLOOD TO LIVERPOOL! Sturridge steps up to take the penalty he won and, after stuttering a little with his run, he dispatches it to his left. De Gea gets a hand to it, but it isn't enough.
M. Depay
Yellow Card
PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL! Depay's efforts with regards to tracking back prove to be for little, as the winger trips Sturridge on the edge of the area! The referee seems hesitant at first, but he eventually points to the spot!
That's better from Liverpool! Again a driving run from Can is crucial, as he takes the ball out from the back and then finds Coutinho just inside the United half. His first-time flick releases Moreno, who crosses to the back post. Sturridge collects and then cuts it back towards the edge of the area, but Lallana takes it off the toe of Henderson and the move collapses.
Good defending by Smalling. Can picks the ball up in midfield and charges forward, playing it forward to Sturridge, but the England striker is quickly tackled by his international colleague.
Liverpool have perhaps been guilty of allowing United to gain a foothold in this, but they are back on the front foot and looking to dictate. The hosts are quick to put pressure on the visitors' defence and midfield, with their own backline sitting pretty high. That may be a risky move - Liverpool of all teams need no reminding of Martial's pace.
Martial finally gets his first real involvement as he is forced out to the left. He initially does well against Henderson, spinning around him and then running at Clyne, but the striker can't quite put the ball between the defender's legs.
The free-kick ultimately comes to nothing, though, as Mata's in-swinging delivery from the right is comfortably plucked out of the air by Mignolet.
Excellent play by Varela, as the Uruguayan receives a pass into feet but allows it to run through him with the view to running on to it again. Moreno falls for it and trips the youngster. Free-kick in a good position now for United.
A very heavy touch just inside the United half allows Mata to pounce, as the visitors look to exploit the space left in the Liverpool midfield, but the Spaniard is hauled down by the former Hoffenheim man.
Rashford already looks as though he will be a useful asset out on the right for United. Again he tracks back and helps out Varela, before then charging up the right and darting beyond Can, who is forced to foul the winger.
Good pressure here from Liverpool. The home side are keeping their visitors penned in here, probing with intent. Lallana manages to squeeze a low cross into the danger zone and Sturridge meets it with a clever flick, but no one is there to anticipate that pass.
Excellent tracking back from Rashford there, as the winger helps out Varela against Firmino and steals the ball. He tries to dribble it out, though, losing it quickly, allowing Liverpool to keep the pressure on.
J. Henderson
Yellow Card
That's a strong challenge from the Liverpool captain. Henderson shows his studs and catches Schneiderlin and the England international receives an early booking.
ALMOST AN AMAZING START! Straight from the kick-off United are attacking up the left. Depay gets away from Clyne and clips a good cross into the centre. Moreno misses and Rashford is there, but he doesn't gamble on the defender letting it run and the ball strikes the teenager before going harmlessly behind the goal.
Off we go for this huge match! United get us under way!
The players are out and lined up side-by-side on the pitch. Kick-off is just a few moments away!
And so begins the home fans' rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone', while a chant of 'Manchester, Manchester' can be heard bellowing from the visiting support. There's already quite the atmosphere brewing at Anfield!
Another boost to Van Gaal will be the return of Bastian Schweinsteiger. The German midfielder has been out since early January and has been named on the bench. The former Bayern Munich star will be a likely substitute should United be ahead towards the end and need to add a little extra composure to the midfield. There is little in the way of attacking threat on their bench, though the same cannot be said for Liverpool, who have both Christian Benteke and Divock Origi waiting in reserve today. Just earlier this month the latter also revealed that he once turned down a move to Old Trafford - could he be the one to halt United in this tie?
United themselves continue to struggle in terms of first-team numbers, with a host of players missing out through injury. Louis van Gaal has made three changes today, though, including handing a return to Marouane Fellaini, who has been out for a few weeks. He takes the place of Ander Herrera, while Michael Carrick and Matteo Darmian also drop to the bench. Morgan Schneiderlin and Guillermo Varela slot into the starting XI as a result. Elsewhere there are few surprises in the team, but the coach will no doubt be happy to again name a defence including Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo, and he also hands another start to Marcus Rashford in attack.
For the visit of their bitter nemesis, Liverpool have named arguably their strongest XI, with both Nathaniel Clyne and Alberto Moreno starting at full-back and offering plenty of support going forward. A little forward Jordan Henderson makes his 300th appearance in senior football alongside Emre Can, who will provide energy, bite and surging runs from the middle. In attacking midfield Adam Lallana will be keen to continue his good spell, while tricky Brazilians Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho are starting to forge a fine understanding. Leading the line will be Daniel Sturridge, who has returned from injury in good form. There's enough there to hurt United, that is certain.
For obvious reasons, this tie caught the imagination of almost every football fan as soon as the draw was made. English football's most successful clubs going face-to-face in Europe for the very first time, with their intense rivalry set to hog the spotlight once again today. Of course, neither are quite at the pinnacle of the sport currently, but both clubs boast plenty of talent and encounters of this nature - featuring two teams so opposed to one another as these -  rarely fail to live up to the hype, with so much more than just a first-leg win at stake.
