Match Preview

India got off to an impressive start with a 4-1 win over Thailand that surpassed the expectations of many as Sunil Chhetri found the back of the net twice with Anirudh Thapa and Jeje Lalpekhlua joining him on the scoresheet with a goal apiece.

Ashique Kuruniyan has also impressed which has opened up more attacking options for head coach Stephen Constantine to work with.

Constantine's stratergy of adopting quick counter attacks is also something that worked well with Pritam Kotal and Subhasish Bose overlapping on their respective flanks with Udanta Singh and Halicharan Narzary on the wings respectively.

The defending has been resolute with a familiar back four of Kotal, Sandesh Jhingan, Anas Edathodika and Bose at the helm who have not conceded a single goal from open play in the five games they have started together. The only goal they conceded against Thailand came from a setpiece.

Considering the big win in their opener, even a point against UAE would immensely improve India's chances qualifying for the Round of 16, Although it can depend on Bahrain's result against Thailand as well. Chances are still good given that the top four third-placed teams stand a chance of making it through from among the six groups in the competition.

Ahmad Khalil after scoring UAE's goal against Bahrain

UAE snatched a point courtesy a late penalty scored by Ahmed Khalil, who started from the bench against Bahrain but is likely to be given a start by Italian gaffer Alberto Zaccheroni on Thursday.

The centre-backs Khalifa Mubarak and Fares Juma came in for some criticism for failing to keep a check on the Bahraini attack. However, it is in the midfield and attacking departments that some changes could be rung in.

Khalfan Mubarak was among the first to be brought off early in the second half and it was his replacement in Saif Rashid who controled the midfield and injected some pace to trouble the opponents. Expect Rashid to start against India in order to set an early precedence.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Khalil marked his 100th international cap in style by scoring a late penalty after being brought on as an impact subsitute. The next tie would be crutial for the hosts who need a win in order to boost their qualification chances.

Set to play their second successive game at the Zayed Sports City Stadium, the fans of the hosts will also expect the likes of Ismail Al Hammadi and Ali Mabkhout to convert any given opportunity.

Can India confirm their qualification with a win or will UAE make amends for their weak start?
