Enyimba stepped up their pursuit for a first-ever Caf Confederation Cup title after demolishing Rayon Sports 5-1 in Sunday’s second leg of the quarter-final in Aba.
Goals from Stanley Dimgba, Ikouwen Utin, Sunday Adetunji, Joseph Osadiaye and Oladuntoye Isiaka powered the People’s Elephants to their biggest win in this year’s Caf Confederation Cup, cruising past the visitors 5-1 on aggregate.
Starting up like a house on fire against the Rayon, who were held to a goalless draw in the first leg in Kigali a week ago, Enyimba underlined their ambition to clinch a first Caf Confederation Cup crown.
The two-time Caf Champions League winners only needed 12 minutes to open the lead through Dimgba’s effort - a minute after Abalogu’s header failed to go in.
The unrelenting visitors responded brilliantly as Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana struck in the 29th minute to level matters but the hosts were fired up to regain the lead and Ikouwem Utin scored four minutes later.
Sunday Adetunji tapped in Dimgba’s superb pass for Enyimba’s third in the 48th minute before Osadiaye’s free kick was deflected and beats goalkeeper Bashunga Abouba for the fourth on the hour mark.
Rayon came close to pull one back but Gilbert Mugisha failed to make a great deal of his glorious chance as his effort went off target in the 72nd minute.
Still not satisfied yet, the Nigerian giants pushed for another through Osadiaye’s free kick which was spilled by Abouba but Oladuntoye heads in from close range to seal the big win.
Having completed the rout of Rayon, Enyimba will be looking forward to take on the winner between Raja Casablanca and CARA Brazzaville in a potential thrilling semi-final date.
