Commentary

That's all from Madrid today, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!
These two clubs next meet in the Supercopa semi-finals at the start of next year, so will resume hostilities then.
Some woefully wasteful play from either side in the opposition area means that they both receive all they deserve - a share of the spoils from a testy and hard-fought game. While the referee's handling of certain situations perhaps left a lot of room for contention, Atletico lost all sense of discipline as they chased the three points and were even more aggressive when reduced to 10 men. Certainly not a game for the purists!
J. Giménez
Yellow Card
90' + 7' Yet another booking for dissent accrued for frustrated Atleti, as Gimenez remonstrates with the officials after the final whistle.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 0-0 ATHLETIC BILBAO
90' + 5' Berenguer's corner is nodded down by Villalibre, only for Zarraga to fire the last opportunity to score way over the crossbar. This game is destined to end all-square.
90' + 3' Possibly the 10-man home side's last chance goes to waste, as De Paul curls an attempt just over from 20 yards out, with Simon standing unperturbed on his line.
90' WHAT A MISS! A wonderfully placed pass from Berenguer is crying out to be struck home for a late winner by the substitute Villalibre, but he can only steer his attempt over the bar from inside the area, while unmarked. Truly a golden opportunity is spurned! It stays goalless at the Metropolitano.
Matheus Cunha
Yellow Card
89' Another substitute is booked for Atletico, as Cunha goes into the referee's well-thumbed notebook for a late tackle.
Oier Zarraga
Dani García
87' Dani Garcia comes off for Zarraga, with the clock ticking down.
85' Savic steers his header from the centre of the box high and wide to the left of Simon's goal, following a corner.
Nico Williams
Yellow Card
82' This game is descending into an unedifying scrap here, as Nico Williams is the latest player to be booked.
Jon Morcillo
Muniain
81' Having tried to prompt and create from his limited opportunities, Muniain is now brought off and Morcillo comes on out wide.
Mikel Vesga
Unai Vencedor
80' Vencedor is brought off for the visitors; Vesga comes on.
S. Savić
Yellow Card
79' Savic is another Atletico man to see yellow for protesting to the referee, who clearly detests any form of dissent.
78' HE'S OFF! For his heated protests about being booked just moments before, Felix is swiftly shown a second yellow card and must exit not long after coming off the bench. Incredible stuff! Can Athletic now capitalise on having the extra man?
João Félix
Yellow Card
78' Felix is harshly booked for flailing an arm, as he is clearly tugged back in the centre of the pitch.
Matheus Cunha
K. Trippier
77' Trippier is the latest Atletico withdrawal, with Cunha coming on in his place.
76' OFF THE POST! Llorente's low scudding shot across the face of Simon's goal strikes the base of the post, rattling the woodwork but failing to sneak into the net. So close to a belated opening goal!
74' A series of shots inside and around the area are charged down by the packed Atleti defence, as the home side avoid being hit on the break.
72' Suarez is narrowly offside again, as he tries to control the ball with his head, facing away from the goal. Athletic are holding firm here.
70' On the counter, following a failed corner for the visiting side, Suarez is called offside as he attempts to connect with a Carrasco cross from the left.
68' A sliding challenge from Gimenez is required to bring Nico Williams' rapid raid to an end, with the ball going out for a corner on the Athletic right.
66' Trippier inadvertently handles the ball when well placed high up on the right wing, bringing another Atletico move to a premature end.
Asier Villalibre
Williams
64' Marcelino makes changes up front, as Williams goes off to be replaced by Villalibre for the final half-hour.
Nico Williams
Raúl García
63' Having worked tirelessly for the cause, Garcia is substituted and Nico Williams comes on.
João Félix
Á. Correa
60' Correa is now withdrawn by the home side, with Felix on in his place - perhaps he can unlock the resolute Athletic defence?
57' Simeone is already readying another substitution, as his dissatisfaction clearly grows.
Y. Carrasco
Renan Lodi
55' Lodi is replaced on the left flank by Carrasco.
L. Suárez
A. Griezmann
55' One former Barcelona striker gives way for another, with Griezmann being replaced by Suarez - as an increasingly tetchy Simeone rings the changes.
H. Herrera
G. Kondogbia
55' On a booking and having possibly suatained a knock, Kondogbia comes off for Herrera.
53' Ever-ready with a challenge, Garcia brings Savic down to the turf in a 50-50 tussle and is penalised by the award of a free-kick - much to his apparent disgust.
51' Kondogbia hobbles off to the touchline, after suffering a heavy challenge in midfield. He looks in some discomfort, but is cleared to return straight away.
49' CLOSE MISS! Now it's Athletic's turn to pass up an opportunity to lead! A rare error from Gimenez allows Williams to skip through the centre and in on goal, but his low shot skids past Oblak's post. It really should be 1-0 to the away side.
47' ALMOST THE OPENER! The hosts nearly take the lead, as a raking cross-field ball finds Lodi, whose pass finds the head of Correa. The Atleti striker fails to direct his effort on goal though, as it sails just wide of Simon's right-hand post. That was a fast start to the half for Los Colchoneros!
46' We are back under way in sunny Madrid, as Atleti kick off the second half!
Largely frustrated in his attempts to escape the opposition back four during the first 45 minutes, Griezmann has previously scored nine goals against Athletic in La Liga - his joint-best tally against any single opponent - so will surely back himself to add to that tally today.
While Atletico Madrid may have had the clearer-cut chances in the first half - though there weren't many for either side - their visitors have proved a challenge to combat from crosses and a series of set-pieces. In all, the scoreline accurately reflects a tight-fought encounter so far, but the Metropolitano faithful will expect more final-third thrust from their team after the break.
45' HALF-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 0-0 ATHLETIC BILBAO
44' A promising break falters for Athletic, as Berenguer cuts inside but misplaces his pass on the edge of the area. It looks as though this game will go to the interval goalless.
41' Vencedor tries a precise through ball, but Williams is caught just offside as he attempts to spring clear and break the deadlock.
38' The Argentinian duo of Correa and De Paul combine delightfully on the edge of the area, with the latter clipping a cute ball over the Athletic defence, which just eludes the attempts at retention of Llorente.
G. Kondogbia
Yellow Card
36' The referee judges that Kondogbia's challenge on Garcia merits a yellow card, so he will need to take care for the remainder of the game.
35' Garcia is felled by Kondogbia in the centre circle, but after a brief stoppage in play he is fit to resume his duties up front.
34' Vivian intervenes with a timely block on the edge of the box, as Correa tries a shot from the centre of the goal. Some excellent defending there.
32' A swift attack is brought to an end as Lodi miscontrols on the left edge of the area, with the ball then bouncing up against his outstretched hand. That's a free-kick to a relieved Athletic.
Dani García
Yellow Card
30' A fleet-footed De Paul is buffeted by Dani Garcia in the centre of the pitch, and the Athletic midfielder is booked by the referee for his ill-timed lunge.
27' Hermoso is needlesly chopped down by an over-eager Garcia on the right flank, which earns a free-kick and a chance to move Atletico further up the pitch.
25' Another corner for the visitors, as Kondogbia is forced to head behind under pressure - Atleti are being pinned back in their own defensive third.
23' Muniain's brilliant reverse pass finds Martinez clear through on the left side of the penalty area, but the defender is leaden-footed in his attempts to collect the ball and it is then bundled behind via a deflection for a goal kick.
21' A reckless high-footed challenge from Kondogbia offers Athletic a useful set-piece opportunity 30 yards from goal, but they cannot capitalise on the chance and the home side clear their lines.
19' They have made a bright start today, but Athletic have failed to win in their last seven league games in Madrid, since a 1-0 victory against Leganes in April 2019.
17' Another corner for Athletic is thrown high into the area, but Garcia is penalised for an apparently over-aggressive attempt to win the ball aerially.
15' SO CLOSE! Griezmann gets the ball stuck under his feet when presented with a great chance from close range, so his weak shot is easily hacked clear just in front of the line by Balenziaga. With a better first touch, Atleti could be leading.
13' Another testing cross from the visitors is glanced clear by Savic's head. Athletic are growing into the game and are causing some consternation at the back for the champions.
11' Simeone indicates his frustration, as an ambitious cross-field ball fails to find the run of Trippier and Atletico concede possession.
9' Athletic have their first corner, from the right, but Muniain's out-swinging cross is headed clear by Hermoso at full stretch.
8' Garcia is unfortunate not to latch onto a cross from deep on the right, as his run is just short; allowing the ball to drift harmlessly to safety.
6' Simon collects calmly after Savic heads tamely into the ground from just inside the box, following the game's first corner-kick.
4' The hosts are largely on top in the opening few minutes, and Llorente earns a corner on the right-hand side as his cross is blocked.
2' An early half-chance is spurned by Atletico, as Griezmann's left-footed shot from the right side of the six-yard box goes just wide of Simon's near post.
1' We are under way at the Metropolitano!
The players are lined up and ready to start proceedings in Madrid.
Second-half goals from Dani Vivian and Inaki Williams saw Athletic record a 2-0 victory over Mallorca at San Mames last time out, and today Williams reaches 200 consecutive La Liga appearances - becoming only the second player to acheive that feat of consistency, after Jon Andoni Larranaga (202).
At home, Atletico remain unbeaten in La Liga against Athletic under Simeone, who has overseen nine wins and a draw versus the Basque side since taking the reins in Madrid. However, today's hosts have won just two of their last five league meetings between the clubs in all - after winning nine of their previous 11.

After registering a 2-1 victory over Espanyol last time out in the league - with goals from Yannick Carrasco and Thomas Lemar securing another three points - today's hosts were in Champions League action on Wednesday night; opening their group-stage campaign with a goalless draw at home to Porto.
Atleti will be seeking to continue their strong start to the 2021-22 La Liga campaign today, as Diego Simeone's side have picked up 10 points from their opening four matches to sit third in the early table. Meanwhile, Athletic occupy fifth, having posted a total of eight points from their first four fixtures.
