Player Ratings: Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United

Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United - August 2019 Themba Zwane and Hlompho Kekana
Masandawana put on a ruthless showing as they opened their PSL account with a win, but who were the standout performers?

  1. Denis Onyango

    Denis Onyango

7/10| The Uganda international had a relatively quiet first half but showed his quality in the second.

Onyango made some smart saves, especially towards the end of the match, with SuperSport throwing everything at Sundowns as they went in search of an equaliser.

  2. Anele Ngcongca

    Anele Ngcongca

7/10| Despite a shaky start where he picked up a yellow card early on, the right-back displayed grit and determination and was a pillar of strength at the back.
  3. Wayne Arendse

    Wayne Arendse

6/10| With Ricardo Nascimento out injured Arendse needed to take over the leadership mantle at the back, but he seemed to struggle alongside Lebusa, especially from set-pieces.
  4. Mosa Lebusa

    Mosa Lebusa

6/10| The defender did not have his best game but grew in confidence as the game went on.
  5. Tebogo Langerman

    Tebogo Langerman

7/10| In the early stages of the game, the experienced left-back had a torrid time dealing with the threat of Evans Rusike and Grant Kekana down the wing but once fatigue stepped in, there was only one winner.
  6. Rivaldo Coetzee

    Rivaldo Coetzee

7/10| Perhaps a slightly surprising inclusion in the heart of the midfield but Coetzee was impressive.

His passing and reading of the game complemented Hlompho Kekana's engine.

  7. Hlompho Kekana

    Hlompho Kekana

8/10| Kekana continues to roll back the years with scintillating performances.

The Bafana Bafana star was unlucky not find his name on the scoresheet in the first half as SuperSport keeper Ronwen Williams made a sensational save to keep out his rifling effort.

  8. Thapelo Morena

    Thapelo Morena

8/10| The versatile player was undoubtedly a candidate for man of the match.

His pace could not be matched, and at the death, the decision to play him as the furthest man forward proved a masterstroke. Morena unselfishly put the ball on the plate for Themba Zwane to seal the win.

  9. Themba Zwane

    Themba Zwane

8/10| While Zwane may have only recently resumed training following a break after competing at Afcon 2019, he looked sharp and his stellar showing culminated in a goal in stoppage time which took the game beyond their rivals.
  10. Sibusiso Vilakazi

    Sibusiso Vilakazi

7/10| After an injury-ravaged 2018/19 campaign, 'Vila' had a point to prove.

His wonder strike was all that separated the two sides for most of the game, but it was his passing and ability to use his options upfront which really stood out.

  11. Lebohang Maboe

    Lebohang Maboe

7/10| It was not the 24-year-old's best game in a Sundowns shirt.

While he did have a couple of chances to find the back of the net he lacked precision but still proved a handful.

  12. Gaston Sirino

    Gaston Sirino

6/10| The South American came on for Maboe with about 15 minutes to go and did little to affect the game.
  13. Motjeka Madisha

    Motjeka Madisha

Was not on the field long enough to be rated.
  14. Keletso Makgalwa

    Keletso Makgalwa

Was not on the field long enough to be rated.
  15. Ronwen Willliams

    Ronwen Willliams

8/10| A disappointing result for SuperSport, but their No.1 can hold his head up high.

He made a number of telling saves and was undoubtedly Matsatsantsa's best player.

  16. Grant Kekana

    Grant Kekana

7/10| The full-back looked good at the back and his defensive solidity allowed the wingers to play with more freedom.
  17. Luke Fleurs

    Luke Fleurs

7/10| At the age of 19 to withstand the pressures of the Tshwane Derby is no mean feat and Fleurs deserves plaudits.

He was not really troubled and his reading of the game really stood out.

  18. Clayton Daniels

    Clayton Daniels

7/10| The veteran was an ideal guide for Fleurs and was a rock at set-pieces.
  19. Onismor Bhasera

    Onismor Bhasera

7/10| It was another day at work for the full-back to man the left-wing with aplomb.
  20. Teboho Mokoena

    Teboho Mokoena

6/10| The midfielder was not as sharp as he would have hoped and was eventually withdrawn for a more attack-minded Sipho Mbule in the second half.
  21. Dean Furman

    Dean Furman

7/10| Furman was a constant destroyer in the midfield but did not have the same support around him to get his side back into the game.
  22. Aubrey Modiba

    Aubrey Modiba

7/10| The winger was a real threat until his eventual departure with a suspected hamstring injury.
  23. Evans Rusike

    Evans Rusike

7/10| The Zimbabwe international's pace on the wing caused Sundowns a few headaches.

His aerial prowess from set-pieces could also not be underestimated.

  24. Bradley Grobler

    Bradley Grobler

7/10| The forward looked lively and could have had a goal or two had it not been for Onyango in the Sundowns goal.
  25. Thamsanqa Gabuza

    Thamsanqa Gabuza

6.5/10| The former Orlando Pirates man had a lively start on debut but fizzled out as the game wore on
  26. Kudakwashe Mahachi

    Kudakwashe Mahachi

6.5/10| He came on for Modiba but did not have the same impact.
  27. Sipho Mbule

    Sipho Mbule

7/10| A late introduction but almost proved a masterstroke as he injected some much-needed creativity into the attack.
  28. Lungu Ghampani

    Lungu Ghampani

6/10| Came on with just over 20 minutes to go but could not do much to trouble Sundowns' defence.
