'You never know' - Rodgers to Villa speculation addressed by McGinn

The Celtic manager is among the favourites to replace the sacked Steve Bruce at the Championship club.

John McGinn hopes he has a new Aston Villa manager when he returns from Scotland duty.

But the former St Mirren and Hibernian midfielder, in the national team squad for the Nations League game against Israel and the friendly with Portugal, refused to be drawn on whether he would like Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers to be named as Steve Bruce's replacement at Villa Park.

Former Manchester United hero Bruce was sacked last week and Rodgers, along with Brentford boss Dean Smith, Jose Mourinho's former right-hand man Rui Faria and Chelsea legend John Terry, is among the frontrunners to succeed him.

McGinn, 23, was asked about the prospect of former Liverpool manager Rodgers, 45, returning to English football and told The Scotsman: “You never know what’s going to happen.

"But I think Brendan came out the other day and said he’s happy at Celtic, he’s got a job to do.

“What will be will be. If it is Brendan Rodgers or if it is somebody else, I’ll soon see. Hopefully, whoever comes in, I’ll be able to impress them."

McGinn has sympathy for Bruce, who brought him to the club from Hibs in the summer.

“It’s never easy when a manager is sacked and, obviously, Steve Bruce was the manager who signed me," he added.

“I’ve got a lot to thank him for and he was fantastic for me.

“But it’s football. It happens. It’s just never nice to see him and his staff lose their jobs. As a player, you’ve just got to try to focus on working hard, try to impress the new manager when he comes in.

“There have been a few interesting names linked with the job. At every club, there is always this merry-go-round, everyone thinks somebody else has got it. You’ve just got to wait and trust that the club are doing the right things.

“Whoever comes in, hopefully I can manage to impress them and keep my place in the team.”

Smith is favourite to land the Villa job with bookmakers, followed by Faria, Terry, Rodgers and David Moyes.
