The award is given to the best player of the tournament, with the England forward and the France teenager leading the market ahead of the semi-finals

With no clear standout player at this year’s World Cup, the Golden Ball remains all to play for.

The award is given to the player deemed to have played best throughout the duration of the tournament, and only three times in the history of the World Cup has a player who did not feature in the final won it.

Harry Kane, who is also in line to win the Golden Boot, and Kylian Mbappe currently lead the way as joint-favourites in bet365’s market at 7/2 (4.50).

The Three Lions captain has scored six times at the World Cup, although three of his strikes have come from the penalty spot and another was an accidental deflection from a wayward shot, which may make him less likely to win the Golden Ball.

Mbappe became only the second teenager to score multiple times in a World Cup match after Pele some 60 years ago, with teams struggling to deal with his pace and creativity on the ball.

Eden Hazard can be backed at 9/2 (5.50) after putting in exciting performances in each of his appearances, notably against Brazil and Japan in the knockout stages.

Available at 7/1 (8.0) is Croatia lynchpin Luka Modric, who has pulled strings in midfield and will surely win the award if the former Yugoslavian nation are to lift the trophy for the first time.

Kevin De Bruyne has maybe not as impressed as much as he would have liked but is available at 8/1 (9.0), whilst Antoine Griezmann can be backed at 12/1 (13.0) and Romelu Lukaku at 14/1 (15.0) with bet365.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is at 20/1 (21.0) after pulling off a string of fine saves against Sweden, with Paul Pogba and Ivan Rakitic both at 33/1 (34.0).
