It lacked the drama of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's debut for the LA Galaxy, but Wayne Rooney made his first showing in MLS on Saturday night, playing just over half an hour and picking up an assist in 3-1 win for D.C. United as the club opened its new home, the 20,000-seat Audi Field.

The former Manchester United and Everton star was not among the starters on Saturday and was watching on as his new team jumped into the lead through Yamil Asad just 22 minutes into the match against the Vancouver Whitecaps

Rooney made his entrance just before the hour mark with United still just a goal in front, and he played a part in his new club extending its lead.

Playing with his back to goal, the 32-year-old combined with Asad at the top of box before the latter slid the ball across to Zoltan Stieber. Stieber in turn found a streaking Paul Arriola who slotted home to make it 2-0.

Rooney would be credited with the assist on United's third of the night, as his layoff set the stage for a lovely finish from Arriola that put a cap on a great night for Ben Olsen's club.

Saturday's result marked just the third win of the season for D.C. United, though the club has played the majority of its matches away from home as work on Audi Field was completed.

The match against Vancouver was just the third official home league game of the 2018 season for the club, which has not lost any of those three matches and will play 14 more games in the new stadium before the season comes to a close.

Teenager Alphonso Davies pulled one back for Vancouver deep into stoppage time, but it wasn't enough to keep D.C. United from enjoying a convincing win on a big night for the club.
