Kaizer Chiefs legend Vusi ‘Computer’ Lamola says changes need to be made in the team’s midfield ahead of the new 2018/19 campaign.

The Soweto giants endured a disappointing 2017/18 season which saw them end the term trophyless - extending their trophy drought to three campaigns.

However, Chiefs qualified for next season’s Caf Confederation Cup after finishing third in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

One of the players, who has been featuring regularly for Chiefs during their current trophy drought, is Willard Katsande.

The Zimbabwe international is a senior member of the Amakhosi squad and he remains a key player for the Naturena-based outfit.

However, Lamola, who was one of Chiefs’ star players in the 70’s, feels that Katsande has been average in the last few seasons and he needs to be replaced.

"Honestly, speaking I do not think Katsande is still effective in that Chiefs midfield," Lamola told Goal.

The 32-year-old hardman, who joined the Soweto giants from Ajax Cape Town in 2011, made 32 appearances in all competitions for Amakhosi last season.

"That Chiefs midfield needs new blood and some creativity, and Katsande certainly does not offer that. His ball distribution is also not up to scratch anymore,” he continued.

Katsande has struggled to replicate the form that saw him help Amakhosi win two PSL titles between 2013 and 2015 plus two major cup trophies during that period.

The departure of Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who had formed a great partnership with Katsande in Chiefs midfield, could be one of the reasons why the former Zimbabwe captain’s form has dipped.

Nicknamed Yeye, Letsholonyane left Amakhosi for SuperSport United at the end of the 2015/16 campaign as a free agent.

“Something needs to be done in order to improve that midfield - so that the team can start completing for trophies again,” he concluded.

Amakhosi have only signed left-back Letlhogonolo Mirwa, Malagasy attacking midfielder Andriamirado Andrianarimanana and Zimbabwean attacker Khama Billiat thus far during the current transfer window.

Katsande, George Maluleka, Kgotso Malope and teenage sensation Wiseman Meyiwa are new Chiefs head coach Giovanni Solinas’ options in central midfield.
