The Black Starlets coach believes the teenager’s performance in India does not deserve harsh criticisms

Ghana U-17 coach Samuel Paa Kwasi Fabin says striker Eric Ayiah must be cut some slack after the frontman’s performance at the ongoing Fifa under-17 World Cup was put under the microscope.

The skipper has hit three goals in four matches so far but a series of other wasted chances have heightened calls for his drop to the bench.

In the round of 16 win over Niger on Wednesday, the 17-year-old scored from the spot but wasted another opportunity to increase his tally as he missed a second penalty awarded the Black Starlets after Emmanuel Toku was brought down in the box.

“What do they know about him to criticize him, he is our skipper and he is doing well,” Fabin told Starrsportsgh.

“What do they want him to do again?

“The guy has scored three goals and is doing very well.

“I don’t even know what else they want from him.”

Ayiah’s predicaments started in the group opener when his missed some opportunities in their 1-0 win over Colombia.

He again drew blank in the 1-0 defeat to the USA but hit back with two fine goals in the 4-0 triumph over hosts India in the last group game.

At the African championship in May, Ayiah was arguably Ghana’s best player.

The Charity Stars FC youngster netted four times to finish as the tournament’s second highest scorer as the Black Starlets claimed silver in Gabon.
