The AFF Championship trophy tour reached the Philippines last Saturday, and the country put the cherry on top of the promotional event with a major announcement.
Philippines national team manager Dan Palami announced that the Philippines Football Federation (PFF) has appointed former England and Manchester City manager Sven-Göran Eriksson as the head coach of the national team.
Apart from the two English teams, the 70-year old Swede has also won success in Italy with Roma and Lazio, as well as in Portugal with Benfica. He last coached Shenzhen FC in China.
According to Fox Sports Asia, the appointment is for six months, and will see Eriksson leading the Azkals in the AFF Championship, which kicks off in early November, as well as the 2019 Asian Cup, which the country has qualified for for the first time in its history.
“We thank Mr. Eriksson for accepting the position of Philippine Men’s National Team head coach for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup and AFF Suzuki Cup campaign”
“His vast experience as head coach will motivate the team as the Philippines compete for regional supremacy and Asian pride,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta Jr. as quoted by the federation's website.
Philippines' first match under him will be their Group B AFF Championship encounter against Singapore on November 13, at Panaad Stadium, Bacolod.
