Hearts of Oak crushed visiting Wafa 4-0 in matchday 9 of Ghana Special Competition played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, with goals from Michelle Sarpong, Fatawu Mohammed, Manaf Umar and Kofi Kodzi.
Both teams met in matchday 6 on April 21, with hosts Wafa winning 3-2. The Phobians had a revenge to take, according to coach Kim Grant, who said he was aiming at full points without conceding in order to retake the lead in Zone B.
Hearts quickly took possession and maintained domination while the visitors struggled to put their game plan in place.
However, it took the Phobians 30 minutes to get a breakthrough owing to the defensive structure of Wafa.
Joseph Esso claimed a long ball and lunged into Wafa area before connecting Michelle Sarpong, who finished his effort coolly inside the net to put the Accra-based side ahead.
The Academy Boys had a feeble reaction after the goal, ceding more space in midfield as they retreated to avoid more havoc.
Hearts pushed forth and grabbed the double moments before half time, with captain Fatawu Mohammed heading home a cross from Christopher Bonney who delivered from the right flank.
Back from the break the visitors remained in their own half as Hearts of Oak controlled much of the proceedings in search of more goals.
A poor clearance by Wafa goalkeeper Sabi Acquah gifted onrushing Manaf Umar a loose ball, which he drove into an empty post to power Hearts’ lead to 3-0.
Second-half substitute Kofi Kodzi scored the fourth goal in stoppage time to seal the home side’s 4-0 thriller.
Hearts of Oak are new leaders of Zone B with 18 points ahead of Kerela on 17 and will meet Liberty Professionals on matchday 10 in Accra.
