Diego Costa Spain 2018
There have been early goals at both ends in two of Spain's games at the World Cup and there is value in backing the trend to continue against Russia

Concerns have been raised after each of Spain's three matches at the World Cup so far, with La Roja failing to convince many with their displays.

Against Portugal and Morocco there were some wonderful passages of passing play, yet the 2010 world champions have looked vulnerable defensively.

In qualifying for the tournament Spain only conceded three times, yet already they have let in six goals and a surprisingly dangerous Russia side will feel that an upset is possible in Moscow.

Latest odds

Spain however remain clear favourites with bet365 offering them at 8/13 (1.61) to win in 90 minutes and at 1/4 (1.25) to qualify for the next round.

Russia, for their part, are available at 11/2 (6.50) to win and 11/4 (3.75) to qualify.

Team news

Spain manager Fernando Hierro has no injury concerns ahead of the game, although there have been suggestions he could make some changes to the side's formation and bring in some different players.

Russia have defender Igor Smolinkov suspended while midfielder Alan Dzagoev is pushing for a return after injury.

If Spain manage to eradicate some of the individual errors and lapses in concentration which have been present in their opening three games, they should have few problems.

However, the roar of the passionate home crowd will no doubt motivate Russia, and their main chances will surely stem from trying to counter-attack with speed and precision.

Spain's only clean sheet came against an ultra-defensive Iran side, but even they managed to create some excellent chances.

If Russia are able to make a positive start, doubts in the Spain side could resurface and at the very least the hosts could be capable of scoring.

Tips and predictions

The price of 5/1 (6.00) for both teams to score in the first half looks extremely tempting as a value bet.

This bet paid out in Spain's matches against Portugal and Morocco, and while Russia are limited opponents, their speed in transitions could cause La Roja some problems.
