The new Socceroos coach is slowly and somewhat controversially cutting down his World Cup squad

Former Australian striker Archie Thompson is skeptical about Bert van Marwijk's Socceroos squad selection process leading up to the 2018 World Cup, admitting he'd have done things differently.

The new green and gold coach originally named a provisional 32-man squad earlier in the month before trimming it to 26 with a further three to be cut prior to the World Cup.

Jamie Maclaren was a surprise axing from the squad this week despite scoring a hat trick for Scottish side Hibernian over the weekend and Thompson believes it would have been preferable to name a smaller squad and save heartache for players on the fringes.

"There might be a few players that will feel a little bit hard done by but that’s just what happens with World Cups, you wish you could take 60 players," Thompson said.

"I would've liked it if he already had an idea of the 23.

"Bert’s not here to make friends, he’s here to do a job.

"He’s still probably not 100 percent on the 23 so he’s going to take 26.

"I would’ve done it a little bit differently, but I’m not the coach."

The Socceroos final 23-man World Cup squad will be named on June 3 after Australia's first friendly against Czech Republic two days prior.
